Lady Vols News & Notes

Sliding under the radar of Vol fans as they so often do, the Tennessee Lady Vols had five players selected in last week’s WNBA Draft. Candace Parker was the overall number one pick, going to the Los Angeles Sparks.
Alexis Hornbuckle was the number four overall player taken in the draft and will be playing for the Detroit Shock. Shannon Bobbitt will join UT teammate Candace Parker in Los Angeles after the Sparks selected her with the 15th overall pick.
Nicky Anosike is headed to the Minnesota Lynx as the 16th overall selection and Alberta Auguste is headed to the New York Liberty as the 35th overall selection.
To have all five seniors taken in the top 35 is a testament to Pat Summitt’s ability in continually bringing top-level talent to Tennessee.
We should all congratulate these young women who gave their hearts for Tennessee and brought us two national championships. My sincere wish that all of them enjoy a long and prosperous career in the WNBA.
On the recruiting front, the Lady Vols have reloaded for the coming year by signing five of the top 20 high school players in the nation.
According to HoopGurlz.com, Tennessee signed the No. 3 overall player in 6’3” forward Glory Johnson, soon to graduate from the Webb School in Knoxville.
Tennessee has also signed the No. 4 overall player in Amber Gray, a 6’1” forward from West Chester, OH.
Shekinna Stricklen, the No. 8 overall, will be wearing orange next season. The 6’2” forward hails from Morrilton, AR. Shekinna was the top high school girl’s basketball player in the state of Arkansas this year.
Alicia Manning, the No. 15 overall, is a 6’1” forward from Etowah, GA. Alicia was the top high school girl’s basketball player in the state of Georgia this year.
Rounding out this year’s recruiting class is the No. 20 overall player, Alyssia Brewer. She is a 6’3” forward from Supulpa, OK.
By virtue of signing all of these top players, the Lady Vols had the No. 1 recruiting class according to HoopGurlz.com.
The top five classes were Tennessee, Connecticut, Rutgers, LSU and Duke.
Congratulations to Pat Summitt for bringing yet another tremendous class to carry on the tradition of the Tennessee Lady Vols.
