Tennessee Vols Football Recruiting Update
Published by MoonDog on May 12, 2008
A few months ago I wrote an article about one of the most sought high school football players in the country. Marlon Brown, the No. 2 wide receiver in the nation and the No. 12 player overall, has begun spring practice with his team mates at Harding Academy in Memphis. If you didn’t read the first article I wrote about Marlon, please click here to do so.
I’m getting an opportunity to provide a unique perspective into Marlon’s recruitment because my nephew Stephen plays for Harding. I spoke to Stephen yesterday and he shared some interesting news that will be of interest to Tennessee Vol fans, as well as fans of Southern California.
Marlon had a visitor not long ago in the person of Pete Carroll, the head coach of the Trojans. Marlon has also received a telephone call from Matt Barkley, the nation’s No. 1 ranked player according to Scout.com. Barkley has already committed to play for Southern California next season.
On April 30, Brown announced he had narrowed his list of schools to 17 – that’s right – 17 schools that would love to have the 6’5” wide receiver catching passes for them during the 2009 season.
I mentioned in the first article that I became aware of Brown last year while watching Harding play. I was initially there to see my nephew but Marlon is hard to miss. Based on information posted at Scout, Brown has been timed at 4.5 in the 40.
I estimated his speed at 4.6 when I watched him play last fall, and that’s probably closer to reality. It should be mentioned players are usually timed in the 40 when they’re in shorts. You’re going to lose a tenth of a second when you’re in full pads and on grass.
I’m going to make an effort to break away from the real job and check out Harding’s practices. Having been in Marlon’s shoes many years ago, I know how exciting it is to be recruited. I’m anxious to see how he develops during the course of the summer and into the fall.
Perhaps the best news I’ve heard about this young man is the fact he holds a 3.2 GPA, making him easily eligible for any school academically.
Being a Volunteer fan it would please me to no end to see Marlon wearing orange and burning past the Gators or Tide secondary. However, I want to see Marlon pursue his degree at a school he’s most comfortable with. Regardless of which school he decides to attend, I certainly wish him the very best.
I’ll continue to post periodic updates regarding Marlon and his progress.

Moonie….He’ll be a Trojan….unless we are on probation or something.

I’m personally visiting with him too. My nephew can have him over to the house, at which time I’ll be attired in a lovely shade of Volunteer orange.
Loved that interview you did with Bill Baer.
See ya.
