Ole Miss Football Program Has Multiple Departures
Twenty-one players quit from former Ole Miss football coach Ed Orgeron’s last two recruiting classes in 2005 and ‘06.
All those players not graduating should begin to wreck havoc on Ole Miss’ Academic Progress Rate a year or two down the line, possibly causing scholarship reductions. New Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt is well aware of the situation.
“We knew coming here that there was a two-year period where a lot of players left or flunked out,” Nutt said. “We have to show we’re graduating players. I’m hoping we can kick this back up, but where you get in trouble is, your seniors getting ready for the NFL quit before their final spring semester.
“We’ve got to coach those guys to finish school. The air is going to go out of that ball one day. There are no guarantees, so finish school while it’s being paid for.”
SEC Basketball Tournament in Memphis?
SEC executive associate commissioner Mark Womack said Friday the conference is interested in holding a men’s basketball tournament at FedExForum.
Memphis has hosted two men’s and one women’s SEC tournaments, all in The Pyramid.
“Craig Mattox of our office is in charge of the tournament sites, and I know he’s had some conversations with someone in Memphis about interest in holding the tournament there,” Womack said on the last day of the SEC’s annual spring business meetings at the Sandestin Beach Hilton.
The first available SEC men’s tourney date is 2013. The conference is booked next season at Tampa, followed by Nashville in 2010, Atlanta in 2011 and New Orleans (in New Orleans Arena) in 2012. The women’s tourney, which is in North Little Rock next season, is not scheduled beyond 2010 at Duluth, Ga.
No one from Memphis, except AutoZone Liberty Bowl executive director Steve Ehrhart, attended the league meetings.
SEC Announces Early Season Football TV Schedule
The Southeastern Conference announced today that the Sept. 6 game between Ole Miss and Wake Forest will be televised regionally by ABC, beginning at 2:30 p.m. (CT) from Winston Salem, N.C.
“We’re excited that ABC chose to pick up our game with Wake Forest and proud to have this early opportunity to be on TV,” Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt said in a statement. “It will certainly be a challenge on the road for us as we play a Wake Forest team which has won 20 games over the last two years.”
Scheduled to be shown regionally by ABC, the Ole Miss-Wake Forest game is also being televised to areas outside of the regional window, expanding the coverage to most of the nation on ESPN2.
The league also announced Tuesday that Tennessee’s Sept. 13 home game against UAB will be televised by Raycom (WLMT, Ch. 30, in Memphis) and kick off at 11:30 a.m. (CT).
It had previously been announced that ABC will broadcast the Vols’ opener at UCLA on Labor Day, with kickoff at 7 p.m. (CT).
Mississippi State will made ESPN2 appearances on Aug. 30, when the Bulldogs travel to face Louisiana Tech at 5:45 p.m., and Sept. 13, when they’ll host Auburn in their SEC opener at 6 p.m.
