Cards Cruise Past Mets; Mulder Makes First Appearance
By MoonDog | June 30, 2008
The St. Louis Cardinals jumped on New York Mets starter John Maine early, getting two runs in the first inning behind an Albert Pujols run-scoring single and Kyle Lohse pitched seven strong innings to help St. Louis defeat the Mets 7-1 on Monday night in St. Louis.
Lohse gave up five hits, walked two and struck out four. The only run the Mets could muster came about on an error committed by Cardinals shortstop Brendan Ryan in the fifth. Lohse improved his record to 10-2 with an ERA of 3.67.
Meanwhile, Maine was the victim of terrible defensive play from the Mets who committed three errors leading to two unearned runs. Maine went four innings, giving up seven hits, three runs, walking three and striking out one. Maine fell to 8-6 for the year.
The Cardinals Aaron Miles banged out three hits, raising his average to .328. Miles is currently on a 12-game hitting streak. Chris Duncan homered in the fifth inning - his first in six weeks - and Troy Glaus doubled in a run to pace the Cards’ attack.
Mark Mulder got the last three outs, making the first relief appearance of his career in his season debut. He missed most of the previous two seasons with a shoulder injury. Mulder looked sharp, throwing strikes on 10 of his 14 pitches, allowing two bloop singles and recording a strikeout.
“Of course I want to be starting, but right now I really could care less,” Mulder said. “It’s just a relief to be out there and feeling good about what you’re doing.”
The series continues Tuesday night in St. Louis, with the Cardinals expected to send Todd Wellemeyer (7-2, 3.46) to the mound while the Mets are scheduled to send Tony Armas (4-5, 6.03) to the hill.

You’ll get no empathy when it comes to the Mets at this juncture. They’re deserving of everything that’s now coming their way. Minaya as a GM has been a monumental waste of time . And what’s been assembled by him supposedly as a team has no guts or any real leadership on it.
Come the All Star break I do believe that they’ll have to make several decisions as to the direction that this franchise is heading in.
Under La Russa’s tenureship the Cards are proving that they’re a team to be reckoned with year in year out !
