Cowboys & Terry Glenn at an Impasse
By MoonDog | July 3, 2008
The Dallas Cowboys will begin training camp later this month with no real issues to speak of. Tony and Jessica are no more. Adam (The Player Formerly Known as Pacman) Jones has been a good boy and it appears likely he will receive full reinstatement.
There’s no drama from Terrell Owens to report. Tank Johnson hasn’t been caught with a cache of weapons.
Things are blissful in Big D.
The Cowboys training camp will be about molding a few of the new faces, like Jones and recently acquired LB Zach Thomas into the defensive scheme. Some of the draft picks like Felix Jones and Mike Jenkins, both of which will see significant playing time, will need the preseason to acclimate themselves.
There may be some competition at a few backup spots and on the special teams, but for the most part the Cowboys are a team with very few personnel questions.
What’s up with Terry Glenn? The wide receiver’s status for this season remains the only issue concerning this football team and the one question no body really has the answer to.
For those of you not following the Cowboys, let me bring you up to speed with what has become a made-for-TV movie of the week.
Last season, Glenn missed all but the last regular season game against the Redskins and the NFC Divisional round game against the Giants recovering from a knee injury.
Glenn underwent a pair of arthroscopic surgeries last year and could stand to have microfracture surgery to get the knee back in top condition. Glenn has opted against the surgery in hopes of strengthening the knee enough to play this season.
In an effort to protect themselves, the Cowboys asked Glenn to sign a $500,000 injury waiver in case he re-injures his right knee. Glenn was a little miffed when Dallas owner Jerry Jones asked him to sign the waiver. If Glenn were to sign the waiver and suffer an unrelated injury, he would still receive his $1.74 million base salary.
Things really started to get weird when Glenn reportedly fired his agent James Gould and planned to represent himself. It was at that time Glenn was quoted as saying he would not sign the waiver and even hinted at asking for his release if the Cowboys didn’t back down from the waiver issue.
However, since then, Glenn has apparently re-hired Gould, and as of last Friday, the Dallas Morning News reported Glenn, still unable to work out with the Cowboys, appears to be pushing for a prompt return to the team.
Confused?
Don’t worry. I am too.
If all of that wasn’t enough, another report by ESPN’s Ed Werder confirmed internal discussions have taken place among Jerry Jones and others in the organization about the possibility of acquiring Atlanta Falcons WR Joe Horn.
Last week Jones was quoted as saying he wasn’t sure about Glenn’s status with the team.
“What I should be looking at is how he fits as a player this year,” Jones told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “That is what this is about. It’s not about my will against Terry’s will. “Terry is someone I have a lot of interest in,” Jones said. “We have worked good together. It was part of what Terry Glenn is about when we extended his contract.”
As the sands of the hour glass continued to pour ever so slowly, Glenn has changed his tune regarding his potential release from the team.
“I want Jerry to understand that I know he has the ultimate power in everything that goes on with the Cowboys, and I’m not trying to challenge him in any way, shape or form.”
“But what I want is to remain a Cowboy. I’ve been here for five years and I’ve made Dallas my home, and I would love nothing more than to be a Dallas Cowboy.”
While Glenn’s status remains uncertain, one thing is clear. The Cowboys will begin training camp on July 25 in Oxnard, CA with aspirations of winning the Super Bowl, with Glenn - or without him.
As I said, things are blissful in Big D.

If that should happen then I look for the Cowboys to let go of Glenn. If anything Glenn’ll most definitely employment elsewhere. Perhaps back with The Tuna down in Miami ?
He may well have disparaged him by calling him Miss Glenn. But I think that Parcells does like the way that he plays and that he gives it his all .

Top - I’d say you’re right on. But that’s if the Cowboys and Glenn don’t figure something out. I really believe he’ll be in a Cowboy uniform this season.
