Favre is Just Being Selfish
Published by MoonDog on July 13, 2008
We’ve learned the text message Brett Favre sent Green Bay Packers GM Ted Thompson last weekend was in fact a request to seek a return to Green Bay. In addition, we’ve subsequently learned that a teleconference took place late last week in which Favre, Thompson and Packers head coach Mike McCarthy discussed the possibility of Favre returning to Green Bay this season.
That conversation ended with Favre seeking his unconditional release from the Packers.
At this point I can only believe Brett Favre is more concerned with his personal legacy instead of helping a team win a Super Bowl.
Taking into account the options that are available to Favre, the likelihood of the Packers releasing him and ultimately landing with a legitimate Super Bowl contender is remote. Given the fact the Packers don’t have to release Favre would obviously preclude him from playing for anyone during the 2008-09 season, other than the Packers if they choose to allow his return.
Some may want to place blame on Thompson by taking the position Favre has retired and the Packers have moved forward in their preparation for the coming season. But Thompson and the Packer organization have reacted exactly as they should.
Favre’s request so close to the beginning of training camp is a totally selfish act. It’s apparent he doesn’t have any concern what effect his actions will have on the Packers, in particular the effect it will have on Aaron Rodgers.
Favre announced his retirement from the league on March 6 and waited four months - not unlike the previous three offseasons in which he waited several months before arriving at a decision to return to the Packers.
I can’t imagine Favre would honestly think the Packers would welcome him back, much less anoint him as the starting QB. It would destroy the confidence of Aaron Rodgers and would push the development of second-round draft pick Brian Brohm behind at least one year if Favre was allowed to return.
Some have suggested Favre should be allowed to take all the time he needs to arrive at a decision because of his standing in the league. That’s utter nonsense. Others have even suggested Favre would make the Packers an even better team with him being the starting QB. That’s more nonsense.
Late Friday ESPN’s NFL Live analyst Cris Carter suggested other players of Favre’s stature have waited several months prior to announcing their decision to return. Carter used Hall of Fame left tackle Anthony Munoz as an example of a player that took his time arriving at a decision.
That comparison isn’t worthy of consideration.
While Munoz was a great player, he was a left tackle, not a starting QB. Left tackles help teams win games; starting QB’s win games based on their individual efforts.
It isn’t out of the realm of possibility Favre will play for someone in the NFL this season, but it’s highly unlikely it will be for the Packers. The Packers shouldn’t allow him anywhere near Green Bay because of all the trouble he’s caused.
Instead of getting ready for the start of training camp, the media focus will be on the Favre situation. New starting QB Aaron Rodgers will likely be inundated with questions, as will his Packer teammates, regarding the status of Favre rather than the team working their way toward the season opener.
Favre’s legacy is secure and he will be remembered as one of the greatest players in NFL history. Five years from now Favre will be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
In other words Brett, you don’t have to prove anything.
Head back to Kiln and enjoy your millions. Do some fishing. I really don’t care what you do, as long as you cease with your self-centered behavior.

Tell me something we don’t already know about Favre. His life has now become a soap opera of monumental proportions. And yet he still craves the limelight. He cares more for himself than he does about the franchise and his family.
Hopefully the Packers as an organization’ll do the right thing.
The longer this story goes on meanders through our awareness. The more we’ll get sick and tired of it all, including Favre himself.
At this juncture I find the whole tedious and about as newsworthy as sh#t sliding of a shovel.

Right on. To Favre I say “Good God man, make a decision and stick with it already”. You either want to play football or you don’t. You can’t blame the Packers for taking him at his word that he was retiring…

CK0712 - I agree he should ride off into the sunset. While he may be able to play at a high level, he should have stated his intent four months ago.
Top - Soap opera is an appropriate description. For him to do this so close to the start of training camp is absurd. I can’t believe the professional media isn’t calling him out for this. Instead, they’re coddling him.
GoPurple - I hear you buddy. I’m having trouble understanding what takes him so long to figure out if he wants to play. Now he comes to a decision and acts like the Packers should allow him back. Absurd.

The press’ll never call Favre as in their eyes he can do no wrong. He’s been placed so high on that perch/pedestal that he’d have to commit some heinous crime for them to turn ultimately against him.
And when one considers how inconsiderate he has been to the franchise and some of his teammates over the years. I can understand the reason why they feel it’s necessary to be kissing his a##. But in my case that wouldn’t be happening at all. I feel that he’s served the game of football well but his attitude stinks to high heaven when it comes to how he treats the franchise and how he expects to be treated in return. Less he forgot it takes a team to win but only one person to implode that whole concept as to what can happen when you become selfish as he’s doing now.
