Cowboys Sign Hamlin to 6-Year Deal
By MoonDog | July 15, 2008
DallasCowboys.com staff writer Nick Eatman is reporting the Cowboys have signed safety Ken Hamlin to a long-term deal.
Just hours before a deadline that would’ve precluded him from signing a long-term contract this season, Hamlin signed a six-year deal worth $39 million.
The new deal includes $15 million in guaranteed money, including a $9 million signing bonus. The Cowboys had until 3 P.M. (CDT) today (Tuesday) to sign Hamlin to a multi-year contract.
Otherwise, Hamlin would have played the 2008 season on the one-year, $4.396 million franchise tender the team placed on him in late February.
The Cowboys turned the deal into the league office with less than an hour to spare.
The announcement addresses one of two remaining personnel questions involving veteran players. Wide receiver Terry Glenn is in negotiations with the Cowboys about a deal owner Jerry Jones has offered that includes a $500,000 injury waiver.
Hamlin’s agent, Kennard McGuire, arrived in Dallas on Monday to finalize the contract talks with Stephen Jones, the Cowboys’ director of player personnel.
Hamlin played prep football at Frayser High School in Memphis and later went on to play at the University of Arkansas.
Hamlin was a second-round draft pick of the Seattle Seahawks in 2003, where he played four years before becoming a free agent following the 2006 season. Hamlin signed a one-year deal with the Cowboys last season as an unrestricted free agent.
Since the free agency period began, the Cowboys have reached long-term contracts with Flozell Adams, Marion Barber, Terence Newman and Terrell Owens.
