The Big Orange Roundtable - Vol(ume) 2
By MoonDog | July 15, 2008
It seems like we just did this (we did) and already we’re up and running with the second version of what has quickly become the most dominant roundtable in blogosphere history.
With the roaring success of last week’s roundtable providing the foundation, the Big Orange Roundtable is being hosted by The Power T this week.
Doug appears to have done a really nice job mixing in two of my favorite three subjects - football and food. I won’t mention my third favorite subject and it isn’t what you may think.
One quick note regarding the roundtable logo - LawVol did an exceptional job designing this and I really appreciate his efforts.
As each of the participating blogs posts their answers I’ll update this post with a link to the sites in question. Please continue to check back over the next day or so to see the updated answers from each blog.
On to the good stuff.
1. A position of strength for the Vols this fall should be wide receivers. Which 2 guys will emerge from the pack to start the opener against UCLA alongside Lucas Taylor? Why?
Gerald Jones and Austin Rodgers. Gerald Jones is the X factor. Guys like Rodgers, Hancock and Briscoe have proven to be pretty dependable receivers but they aren’t the playmakers like Gerald Jones is.
Dave Clawson can put him anywhere on the field and utilize his skills. If I were Dave Clawson, I’d be giddy knowing I had a weapon like Gerald Jones to work with.
You always need a possession receiver and Rodgers has proven to be just that. He’ll go over the middle and get those tough yards to keep the chains moving.
Now you have defenses worrying about Taylor and Jones burning you deep. Mix in Rodgers and Cottam or perhaps Foster out of the backfield and you have a formidable passing attack.
2. Which game on the schedule do you, as a fan, need Tennessee to win for your own sanity and happiness? Why?
The Gators. I respect the Gators, but I hate them. I hate Urban Meyer. I hate their fight song. I hate their uniforms. I hate Tebow. If we’re all going to die as a result of an asteroid striking the earth, I would want it to land in the middle of Gainesville. A big asteroid too. Seven miles wide and weighing 500 billion tons.
Perhaps an argument can be made that LSU has ascended to the top of the elite SEC programs, but Florida is still clearly in the mix of those school’s that are mentioned annually as having an opportunity to win the SEC championship.
Every season Tennessee’s success - or failure - starts with Florida. This season is no different. UCLA will be a good challenge but that’s a game the Vols should win by two touchdowns or more. UAB is a game that will make the fans happy at the home opener.
A victory over the Gators sets the tone for the remaining schedule and obviously gives us an important leg up in the SEC East. Anything other than a victory against Florida is unacceptable.
3. What are your thoughts on the 8-win clause in Coach Fulmer’s new contract that automatically rolls his contract over another year if he wins 8 games in a season?
Personally I’m not in favor of an incentive laden contract unless the incentives exceed the average expected output. While eight victories in a single season isn’t a given (see 2005), it’s reasonable to assume less than eight wins is an anomaly. I would have preferred to see at least nine wins, preferably 10.
In addition, instead of his contract rolling over I’d rather see bonuses paid for achieving a number of goals: 10 wins, SEC East champions, SEC Champions, BCS bowl victory and BCS national title.
4. What is your favorite gameday recipe, whether for tailgating or in your own kitchen? Explain why in delicious detail.
Neck bones and grits. OK, seriously. I’m into pizza. I’m REALLY into pizza. In fact, you can call me a connoisseur. I take those Boboli pizza crusts, make my own sauce, apply my toppings and grill it for 10-15 minutes. That’s right - grill it. You don’t need a lot of coals and you want to induce smoke to really give it the flavor.
I may do baby ribs while I’m at it or some Hillshire Farms Smoked Sausage. I am a firm believer in a low-fat, low-cholesterol diet.
5. You have a tag team championship match against the Legion of Doom coming up. Which current Volunteer do you choose as your tag team partner? Why?
Ramon Foster. At 6-7 and 340 pounds, Ramon is obviously a large young man. I like guys that have been assigned their own zip codes and have planets orbiting them.

We all love the low-fat food, especially Ramon Foster, who would get straight-up abused by Eric Berry in our cage duel.

You know, that whole discussion about the asteroid and Florida … it got me all choked up — such a beautiful image.
I agree all the way across, excellent thoughts, and much better (and way more succinct)than the crap I barfed up.
Preach on, Brother Dog!

LawVol - I wasn’t going to say anything about all of you writing those 9 paragraph answers but…
Sports - I’ll be over there from time to time. I’m a one-man show around here and between this and the real job, time is constrained. I’m glad you hooked up with them.
I was telling LawVol today I’d like to find someone foolish enough to write a few for this site.
