I’m a Blogger, Therefore I Eat Cheetos

Bill Baer sent me this earlier today and he’s written his response to yet another in the professional media making disparaging comments with regard to bloggers.

Joe Scarborough made the following statement in response to a perceived slight against fellow journalist and all-around gas bag Keith Olbermann.

“I was talking about someone on another network. […] But again, you know the problem is when you’re in the basement and you’re blogging and you’re eating Cheetos, sometimes the Cheetos dust goes up, ya know, and you get two choices: You can either keep typing, or you can stop for a second and wipe the Cheetos off your chest, clear out your ears and take a closer listen. But they don’t do that. And therein lies the problem with the Cheetos Brigade.”

Fear and loathing may be the most aptly applied terms regarding the constant barrage from the professional media. Scarborough can be proud his name is now associated with the likes of Stephen A. Smith, Bill Conlin, Bob Costas, Roy Exum and others who have made belittling bloggers a new sport.

I would have included Buzz Bissinger among those that have taken their swipes at the blogosphere, but his recent reconciliation with Will Leitch leads me to believe he’s come to his senses and joined the good side of the force.

I want to put everyone’s mind at ease - as I write this, I promise I’m not sitting in my basement because, well, I don’t have a basement. Moreover, I’m wearing more than my underwear and I absolutely, categorically deny eating Cheetos as I type. For the record, I prefer Fritos Scoops with Pancho’s cheese dip.

Last December when I became aware of Stephen A. Smith’s comments in an interview with L.A. Times columnist Tom Hoffarth, I was pissed off that someone of Smith’s ilk would suggest that I, and no one else for that matter, had a right to avail myself of the First Amendment in a public forum.

Now, as the attacks from the professional media continue to come, I find myself laughing at the sheer absurdity and the obvious ignorance of the “pros” that seem to have this air of entitlement.

While the chances are good I’ll never win a Pulitzer, I’d like to think I make a solid case for bloggers everywhere that are capable of original thought and expressing it in a written format.

If I had an opportunity to speak personally with Scarborough, I’d be willing to bet that he would quickly back track from his statement. Why? Because I’d be eating Cheetos and blowing the partially consumed dust in his face.

I’m not naive and realize that as an individual blogger I may attain the status of “respectable” among my peers in the blogosphere, but I’m of the opinion that we’ll never gain such a status among those in the professional media.

The attacks will continue to come and I’ll be given an opportunity to address them, hopefully as I’m swilling my 9th beer while I gaze lovingly at that bag of Cheetos.

Be careful though — that Chester Cheetah is a sly one: beady eyes (which he obscures with sunglasses), acts like he is cool, preys on the young and elderly. I’ve got questions about his loyalties. I believe Cheetos to be part of a much larger plot by the Communists to take over our minds…

Outstanding article. I think your point is well made — why is it that we as bloggers can be derided as “Cheeto-eaters” while the mainstream media seems to lose their minds every time that the blogging community calls them out on a minor inconsistency.

Of course, my blog is, essentially, Cheeto orange…

    LOL.

Cheetos: Voted the top food snack of bloggers everywhere.

While they are a lovely shade of Orange, I’m sticking with my Fritos. Besides, the cheese dip I like is kind of Orange. I put a little cajun pepper in it to spice it up.

Red+Yellow=Orange. Almost as difficult as the Quadratic Formula.

I’m more of a corn chips and salsa kind of guy. Now upon further digging, I find that “Crooks and Liars”, the blogger that Scarborough apparently was responding to, is a blithering idiot. Joe’s problem is painting the blogging community with a broad brush instead of being specific about those too stupid to be taken seriously. Including Olbermann.

Purp - That’s the same thing they all do. They focus on one idiot blogger among a million and use that as a representation of all bloggers.

Or they’ll take issue with something that was reported by a blogger but turn a blind eye to the their own shortcomings.

They’re just jealous that we get to sit around and eat cheetos and drink beer and have a lot more fun than they do.

Something I forgot to mention in the post - if memory serves, Simon did a piece on Stephen A. some months ago about him having to buy a domain name.

He was talking about it on his short-lived radio program and doing so while he ate - - CHEETOS.
