Cowboys Will Release Terry Glenn
By MoonDog | July 26, 2008
The Dallas Cowboys will release holdout wide receiver Terry Glenn, but Cowboys owner Jerry Jones didn’t rule out the possibility of Glenn returning if he isn’t claimed by another team.
“My understanding is he’s going to get himself ready to play and at the same time not be foolish and expose himself to injury,” Jones said. “If we want to do something in the future, we’ll do it on a good arm’s length basis, a new deck of card as far as any business is concerned.”
Jones insisted this was not the result of Glenn’s refusal to sign a $500,000 injury waiver. The months-long dispute between the two sides has been the Cowboys only real offseason drama and apparently Jones has decided it’s time to end it.
News of Glenn’s release became public after the Cowboys first training camp practice Friday. Among the player reactions were fellow wide-outs Patrick Crayton and Terrell Owens.
“We’ve been practicing without him, preparing for whatever the situation may be for a while,” said Patrick Crayton, who became the primary No. 2 receiver last season.
“With him being out last year, we had some guys that stepped up. It’s pretty much our same lineup,” Owens said. “It’s not a burden. I relish these opportunities. Just like last year, I knew when he went out, went down, I had to step my game up. For me, it’s an opportunity just like other guys see this as an opportunity.”
Glenn missed all but the season finale last year after recovering from two knee surgeries. His right knee is still in need of microfacture surgery to completely resolve the injury, a procedure Glenn has opted against.
Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips echoed Crayton and Owens saying, “We still set a lot of records last year as far as the passing game is concerned, I think we have the nucleus of a really good passing team, a really good offense. I think we can continue that with the players that we have.”
Dallas has young wide-outs Sam Hurd, Austin Miles and 2007 draft choice Isiah Stanback ready to step in. Jones and Phillips are ready to move past the Glenn issue and begin developing the younger players.
“At the end of the day it had more to do with where we are right now … all that might have impacted how we give our young players a chance in how we evaluate that position.”
The Cowboys continue preparations for the 2008 season today at their Oxnard, CA training facility.
