Who is Going to Stop Rafael Nadal?
By Lloyds Apple | July 31, 2008
Rafael Nadal. Wow, that was easy.
Nadal just beat Germany’s Nicolas Kiefer in the final of the Rogers Cup on Sunday to win his fifth consecutive tournament in a whirlwind tour of greatness that included a title on the grass of Wimbledon and the French Open clay courts.
That has allowed Nadal to move within 300 ranking points of current numero-uno Roger Federer and he’ll have his chance to dethrone the previously greatest ever at the Cincinnati Masters this week.
This recent string of success has allowed me to form the conclusion that the only person that can stop Rafael Nadal is, well, himself.
During the Rogers Cup, Nadal did not play that well, at least by his standards, but he did what the best do, and that’s win. Hard courts are still Nadal’s biggest enemy, as he can appear mortal at times, while on clay he stands no chance of losing.
His winning streak has included wins on three different surfaces so it can be said that this 22-year old has rounded out his game pretty damn well.
In my opinion, he is the most exciting player in tennis and for anyone to deny that fact is crazy. Sure, there are still the Federer fans who won’t let go of the fact that someone else has emerged but like Hillary Clinton supporters, they will have to let that notion go or become yesterday’s news.
Grasping for ideas as to how Nadal will eventually lose here our a couple:
His left arm will eventually outweigh his right arm so much, he’ll lose all balance. Seriously, I’ve never seen someone whose one arm is twice the size as his other.
He is of course left handed but still, it’s kind of freaky. Apparently his left arm is strong enough to give him the best backhand and one of the best forehands in the game.
Or, he gets mesothelioma and dies. OK, this is a stretch beyond a stretch but apparently studies have shown that some forms of carbon nanotubes can create lesions in lungs similar to what happens from asbestos exposure.
Tennis racquets, golf balls, baseball bats and lots of other stuff are made from these nanotubes. Of course, end users have nothing to worry about but when considering who or what can beat Nadal, this is what I come up with.
For all you people who stopped watching tennis 5, 10, or 20 years ago I urge you to turn on the television and watch this freak-of-nature tennis phenom.
Why should I care, you ask? Because it’s always fun to watch a young guy who is already, so clearly, the best.
