Vols Top Prospect Set to Narrow List
Published by MoonDog on August 4, 2008
The Tennessee Volunteers will learn in the not too distant future whether they’ve made the short list of school’s vying for the services of Marlon Brown, the top-rated prospect in the state of Tennessee and the No. 19 rated prep football player nationally.
His Harding Academy team mates began two-a-day practices last week that ended with a scrimmage against Manassas High School last Friday. Brown had been participating in a national AAU basketball tournament last week and didn’t play in the scrimmage.
Brown is set to begin football practice today, with the team working out in the weight room in the morning and returning in the afternoon for outdoor practice.
Earlier this summer Brown announced a list of 10 school’s that he was considering, including Tennessee. Other program’s that have been very active in pursuing Brown are USC, UCLA, Oklahoma, Stanford, LSU, Georgia, Florida, Ohio State and Notre Dame.
Brown isn’t set to make his final decision until national signing day in February 2009. Brown has made it clear there are a number of factors which will lead him to a final decision.
“I care about football history and I care about tradition,” Brown said. “I want a school that is known for winning.” Besides tradition, Brown says the most important decision factor is going to be the coaches. “I just want to play for great coaches. I don’t care about their coaching style. For me…”
Brown was recently in California for the USC Rising Stars camp. “It was a real good time,” he said. “I liked the camp a lot. It was great being there and competing.”
“USC has a nice weight room and the facilities are pretty good,” Brown said. “Plus, I just really love their tradition and the fan support they have. The Coliseum (Los Angeles Coliseum) is amazing and I have a really good relationship with (wide receivers) coach John Morton.
“I call coach Morton all the time and I just like how real he is,” he said. “I never feel like he’s telling me something that isn’t true.”
While visiting the Trojans, Brown decided to check out cross-town rival, UCLA, as well. “UCLA is really nice,” he said. “I loved the campus and the place is beautiful. The weather in California is great.”
Brown says what he likes most about the Bruins is offensive coordinator Norm Chow. “He’s coach Chow,” Brown said. “He’s a great offensive coordinator. Everyone knows he’s one of the best in the country.”
The other California school on Brown’s list is Stanford and he visited Palo Alto for a May junior day. “It’s an amazing thing that they are trying to do there,” he said. “The school has great academics and they want to be great at football too.”
Brown said the schools recruiting him the hardest are USC, Florida and Tennessee. “They e-mail me regularly and keep in contact the most.”
Brown received a personal visit from USC head coach Pete Carroll last spring and has had conversations with Matt Barkley, the nation’s No. 1 rated prospect who has already signed to play for the Trojans next fall.
“I’m going to try and visit Florida this summer too, but the others will have to be official visits in the fall,” he said.
One of those visits will likely be to Georgia, who he admits he’s most looking forward to seeing play next season. “They have a good program and a young team and it’ll be interesting to see how they do. They did pretty well last year, but they should be even better this season.”
If you haven’t seen Marlon perform on the field, you’re missing out on a truly gifted athlete. At 6-5 and 210 pounds, Marlon lines up at wideout, in the slot and in the backfield. He also plays safety on defense and returns punts. If Marlon has the ball in his hands, the Harding Lions have a chance to put points on the board.
Check out this highlight video of Marlon.
I’ll be visiting this week as Harding finishes up their two-a-day practices and I’ll continue to post updates. Harding begins their regular season August 22 against Saint Benedict.
