College Football Season Off To Wild Start
Published by MoonDog on September 4, 2008
Picking up where we left off last season, college football has become as unpredictable as the stock market. Over the first weekend of the new season we’ve seen several major upsets and ever increasing parity.
How many of you just knew Michigan wouldn’t allow another opponent to come into the Big House and beat them in their season opener? Virginia Tech found out how good East Carolina was and Pitt’s stay in the Top 25 didn’t last long with their opening loss to Bowling Green.
Some things we found out over the weekend that didn’t come as a surprise were just how good the Big 12 and SEC are this year and how bad the ACC and Big East looked.
Other than Tennessee’s terrible loss to UCLA and Mississippi State’s loss to Louisiana Tech, the SEC looks as good as advertised, as they normally are.
As much as it galls me to admit it, Alabama looked better than any team from the SEC this past weekend. Their beat down of Clemson was very impressive and perhaps the preseason predictions having the Tide as the fifth or sixth best team in the conference are completely off base.
Texas A&M’s loss to Arkansas State was the only embarrassing defeat for the Big 12. I’ll stand by my earlier prediction that the Big 12 and not the SEC will be the strongest conference in the nation this season.
The ACC’s performance against some of the better teams in the nation was less than stellar, with North Carolina State and Clemson getting pounded by SEC teams and North Carolina just getting by McNeese State. Virginia Tech’s loss to East Carolina wasn’t bad per se, but the rest of the ACC’s teams beat up on weak opponents.
The Big East isn’t really worth talking about, other than West Virginia and South Florida looking good in their wins. Outside of those two, every other team will be lucky to get six wins.
USC is the most talented team in the nation and it showed in their 52-7 thrashing of Virginia. The Trojans looked dominant and as I predicted earlier, they should be in the BCS championship game barring a meltdown.
The Pac 10 as a whole performed well this past weekend, with several conference games kicking off the season. The Big 10 didn’t look too good, with most of the wins coming against weak opponents. The significant losses were the Spartans losing to California and Illinois losing to Missouri; those losses aren’t anything to be ashamed of.
How about some love for the WAC and Mountain West? Fresno State looked really good against Rutgers and Louisiana Tech’s win against a decent Mississippi State team were the highlight wins for the WAC. Utah’s big win on the road against Michigan and Brigham Young’s thumping of Northern Iowa were very impressive. Utah and BYU play in the final regular season game and it could mean a berth in a BCS bowl.
The AP and Coaches Polls have been released - check them out here. I’ve got my own Top 10, and they are as follows:
1. USC
2. Ohio State
3. Oklahoma
4. Florida
5. Georgia
6. Missouri
7. Auburn
8. West Virginia
9. LSU
10. Wisconsin

No love for a team that beats Coastal Carolina. That’s like 11 crackheads vs the Dallas Cowboys.
