Marlon Brown, Drew Chick Lead Harding Lions Over SBEC
By MoonDog | September 6, 2008
On the first autumn-like night of the new season, Harding Academy overcame penalties and mental mistakes to defeat the SBEC Trojans 34-21 Friday night at Harding.
With starting quarterback Phillip Branch on the sidelines with an injured shoulder suffered last week against Donelson Academy, Drew Chick, last season’s QB, passed for three touchdowns and rushed for 57 yards to lead the Lions.
Marlon Brown, the nation’s No. 2 rated WR prospect, totaled 181 all-purpose yards and scored two touchdowns including the Lions’ final TD on a 12-yard run.
After falling behind 7-0 early in the first quarter, Harding tied it with 4:01 remaining when Chick hooked up with Brown on a 22-yard TD pass. That culminated a five-play, 88-yard drive that was led off with a 57-yard completion to Terence Taylor.
SBEC came right back, putting together a beautiful nine-play, 75-yard drive to take a 14-7 lead with 1:11 remaining in the first quarter. On the ensuing kickoff, Brown caught the ball on the 10-yard line and weaved his way through traffic for a 65-yard return.
On the first play of the second quarter and facing a fourth and seven from the SBEC 22, Chick tossed another TD pass, this time to Ben Rogers with 11:45 remaining before half. The Lions missed the extra point to keep the Trojans in the lead, 14-13.
After holding SBEC to three and out, Harding took over on their 30 but the Trojans defense returned the favor, holding the Lions to a three and out. On fourth down a bad snap forced Harding’s punter Stephen Hannah to scramble where he was tackled at the Lions’ 13.
Three plays later, Trojans’ QB Ryan DuBois sneaked in from the two-foot line to give SBEC a 21-13 lead with 8:09 remaining before half.
Harding would answer quickly, scoring on the first play of their next possession when Chick hit Keilan Stittiams with a short pass that he turned into a 70-yard touchdown. Chick tossed a pass to Reid Stafford to convert the two-point attempt and Harding tied it at 21 with 7:52 remaining.
The Lions took the lead for good with 8:22 remaining in the third quarter when Chick sneaked in from the one-yard line to give Harding a 28-21 lead. Harding needed just two plays after Austin Mitchell caught a 43-yard pass on the first play of the drive.
Harding’s defense took control in the second half, forcing two Trojan turnovers. SBEC had an apparent 70-yard TD called back due to a block in the back and never seriously threatened to score throughout the half.
Harding improved to 3-0 and will face University School of Jackson (TN) at home next Friday.
