There has been a lot of reaction in the Memphis Tigers online communities this week after the loss to the Rice Owls this past Saturday. I’ve inserted some quotes found on University of Memphis message boards and as you will see, most are very upset with the direction the football program is going in.

It all started with some disheartened reactions.

Calfan1 – “I’m so done with uofm [sic] football. Im [sic] so done with throwing football games away Im [sic] so done with idiots thinking its because of facilties [sic] wooooooooooo. Im [sic] so done.”

Bossman – “I thought I would feel better today………….I don’t.

Can we please go back and rush 4???????????? So coach said we rushed three to cover them. DAM what would have happened if we rushed 4? Would they have scored 6 times in like 4 minutes?

BTW – Don’t tell Rice it’s hard to come back with these new clock rules.

I am just pissed!”

Late Saturday and continuing on Sunday, there were a lot of fans calling for the firing of head coach Tommy West.

Tigerman – “This team S.U.C.K.S. and it’s [sic] all Tommy’s fault. The D is worse than last year and the year before. The special teams suck as usual and the kicking game sucks as well. Not once did we get the kickoff past the 10 yard line.

In case you weren’t paying attention but we led 28-13 with 11 minutes to go and lost in regulation 42-35. Rice scored on everyone [sic] of their final possessions and outscored us 29-7 in the 4th. You tell me how this team is better than last year?

I don’t see this team winning 5 games if that even. RC (Editor’s Note: Athletic Director R.C. Johnson) better wake up fast and see the problem isn’t the stadium issue or conference but the coaching staff.”

Then there is Griffin. I don’t know Griffin but he obviously loves his blue Kool Aid. I picture Griffin as Kevin Bacon’s character Chip at the end of the Animal House movie screaming that all is fine while the Delta Tau Chi’s had ruined the homecoming parade with their Death mobile.

Griffin – “We are fine – we will turn a corner this year to where everyone is comfortable with where we are going. We will beat Lousivlle [sic] on ESPN and the East Carolina game will be incredible. We will dust Marshall.

When was the last time we saw our DBs attack the receivers and the DL put pressure like they did for a little over a half -its been more than three years – we win this game and everyoen [sic] sees the bright side – the bright side is still there – we just lost. We will get better and it will start next week.

1. We will beat Marshall
2. We will get more experience for Hall and the RBs against the following opponent
3. We will take it out on Arkansas State
4. We will be 3 and 2 and ready for the final seven games.
5. BTW – Louisville is horrible and we will beat them big time on ESPN”

On Monday, The Commercial Appeal sports columnist and on-again, off-again sports radio host Geoff Calkins wrote an article in the local fish wrapper about the Tigers problems. Calkins believed they are due to the head coach as much as the administration’s lack of commitment to the football program. If you haven’t read this article, please do so here.

Geoff Calkins – “Some programs rank their glorious victories; this program ranks its inglorious defeats.”

And the fans react.

T1G3R – “I am bitter about the lack of vision for the program that the administration has, the way politics and Memphis power-brokers are involved in and manipulating the situation, and the current state of the facilities we do have.”

Strat57 – “This sums up what I have been bashed for many months. This is the ugly truth and there is no other way to paint it. I will say this again…coach’s [sic] have been promised things that were not delivered on, effort put on hold due to winning games and going to bowls even without committment [sic] and our own fans who have let the administration let us down.

We want more but don’t act on it. I am upset like everyone else but I know that the reason we are where we are has little to do with a coach as it does the folks who we never hold acccountable [sic]. Geoff nailed it, folks. We laud them for making hoops good but we give them a pass for lack of effort towards football. That needs to change.”

Memphis Tigers WR Duke Calhoun

Then on Tuesday we learned that Duke Calhoun missed practice on Sunday and rumors had surfaced he was going to ask for a transfer. West said he would handle Duke and that all would be fine.

No one is certain what is bothering Calhoun, but I suspect it had to do with the fact he wasn’t getting any balls thrown his direction. He has to know he’s being double teamed but it’s hard to watch Maurice Jones have a breakout game and not feel as though that should have been Duke Calhoun having the breakout game instead.

And now we hear Duke Calhoun is back on the team and attending practices again.

Tiger fans everywhere are miserable. Memphis has lost their first two games and everyone had higher hopes coming into the season. There needs to be a spark from somewhere to turn the season around and get the team back on track to accomplishing its goals.

Here’s one forward looking comment from the message boards.

One Tiger – “It is official [sic] we have hit rock bottom. We are 4 point underdogs to Marshall. A team that lost to Wisconsin last weekend 51-14. Good grief.”
