Big Orange Roundtable Vol(ume) 10
Published by MoonDog on September 12, 2008
This week Gate 21 hosts the Big Orange Roundtable and we delve into some issues surrounding the Vols program that have become troubling. Tennessee’s loss to an undermanned UCLA team was unquestionably very difficult for Volunteer fans to stomach.
We’ll also take a look at the Florida Gators victory against the Miami Hurricanes. Did the Gators run up the score? I’ll offer my thoughts below.
At the end of the post you’ll find links to the other participating sites so please check them out for their answers to this week’s questions.
Here we go.
1. So we’re all still pissed off from losing to a UCLA team we would without a doubt beat at worst eight times out of 10, and now a pretty bad UAB team comes to Knoxville before the epic showdown with Florida and the rest of the SEC gauntlet – the deep breath before the plunge, if you will. What I simply want to know is what do YOU want to see from the Vols this Saturday?
I want this coaching staff to back up what head coach Phil Fulmer was quoted as saying a few days after the UCLA loss. Fulmer noted the poor decisions made during the game and the apparent lack of preparation.
“Nobody spends the time that we spend on kicking. For some crap like that to happen to us, it’s angry. It makes you mad,” Fulmer said.
He said he was not blaming the players for the problems at UCLA because “bottom line is it starts with us. It starts with me and starts with us as a coaching staff and we’ll go from there.”
I’m glad to see Fulmer understands it was the coaching staff and Daniel Lincoln’s continued inconsistency that cost the Vols the game. I want to see Arian Foster stop fumbling the football in critical situations.
I want to see John Chavis stop worrying about playing a soft zone late in the game. I want to see Dave Clawson stop trying to force the passing game. He needs to understand rushing for 350 yards is OK.
That’s why we have this veteran offensive line – use it. Anyone knows an offensive lineman prefers to run block and we have three solid tailbacks we can use to gain yards and control the clock.
I want to see the Vols play with heart, with passion and aggressiveness. I want to see this coaching staff get their collective heads out of their asses and start directing the team based on the flow of the game as opposed to falling upon old habits.
2. Flashback to Saturday night in Gainesville: up 23-3, Florida gets a good punt return by Brandon James inside the Miami 20. With 1:56 left, Urban Meyer sends Tim Tebow back in, and, after a screen pass, a throw into the endzone, and a lost-yardage run, Florida kicks a sand-in-the-face field goal with :25 left, prompting a death stare from Cane coach Randy Shannon and eventually a “handshake” at midfield after the game. Thoughts?
This is a question that’s been asked many times and you’ll get nearly 50% of those responding taking the position that the Gators ran up the score and embarrassed the Hurricanes. The other 50% of those replying will tell you if Miami didn’t like being scored on late it’s their own damn fault.
There was a time not too long ago when Miami and Florida State were the kings of college football and the two top dogs in the state of Florida. Now, the Gators have risen to elite status while the ‘Canes and ‘Noles have fallen on difficult times.
The Gators clearly sent a message with the late score and it wasn’t just for this particular game. It was for all the years Miami beat Florida while the Gators were struggling to gain national recognition. The same holds true with regard to the Gators and Seminoles.
I personally don’t have a problem with what the Gators did. If Miami wants to keep Florida from embarrassing them, they’ll have to figure out a way to beat the Gators. That’s the best way I know how to solve the problem of a team running it up on you.
3. And finally, a question that I’m not sure has been so directly asked in the course of the Roundtable, but one that needs answering: the “woo” in Rocky Top…do you “woo” and why do/don’t you “woo”?
Back in the day, no one “Woooed” during Rocky Top and whoever started it should be shot. It’s stupid, period. I’m completely serious when I state someone within the university hierarchy should step in and put a stop to it.
Listen to the lyrics of the song and at no point do you hear a “woo.” Horton may hear a who but Rocky Top shouldn’t hear a woo.
