University School of Jackson (TN) quarterback Jake Overbey completed 31-of-43 passes for 295 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Bruins to a 31-24 victory over previously unbeaten Harding Academy.

Harding’s Marlon Brown, the nation’s No. 19 overall prospect and a recruiting target of the Tennessee Volunteers, had 218 all-purpose yards, including 11 receptions for 185 yards and two touchdowns.

On Harding’s second possession the Lions needed only four plays to get on the board. Brown caught a 29-yard pass from Drew Chick on the first play of the drive. Then on a third and 15, Brown scored on a 43-yard pass from Chick to give the Lions a 7-0 with 5:56 left in the first.

The Bruins answered on their next possession with an 11-play, 86-yard drive. USJ had three plays called back because of penalties, one of which was an apparent 85-yard TD catch by Danny Smigielski.

The Bruins failed to convert on third and nine from the Harding 27 but Will Purcell booted a 44-yard field goal to cut the lead to 7-3 with 0:25 left in the first.

USJ began to find a rhythm in the second quarter, putting together a seven-play, 59-yard drive that ended with a 13-yard TD catch by Austin Martindale to give the Bruins a 10-7 lead with 8:37 remaining before half.

In what became a wild third quarter, Harding opened the second half with an eight-play, 64-yard drive ending with Brown catching a 19-yard TD pass from Chick to give the Lions a 14-10 lead with 9:26 left in the third.

The Bruins came right back, scoring on their first possession of the second half. USJ used a seven-play, 68-yard drive that ended with Martindale catching his second TD of the game on a 17-yard pass from Overbey to give the Bruins a 17-14 lead with 7:01 left in the third.

The Lions would answer on their next possession, needing four plays to march 95 yards. On a second and six from the Harding 21, Chick completed a pass to James Adkins who outran the Bruins secondary to score on a 79-yard catch to give Harding a 21-17 lead with 4:56 remaining in the third.

USJ took control of the game in the fourth, using a six-play, 57-yard drive ending with Martindale catching his third TD of the game on a 22-yard pass from Overbey to give the Bruins a 24-21 lead with 8:24 left in the game.

Harding used a nine-play drive that ended with Connor Ragin nailing a 33-yard field goal to tie it at 24 with 4:42 left.

But the Bruins came right back, scoring on their next possession on an eight-play, 80-yard drive ending with Overbey connecting on a 24-yard TD pass to Eric Dietz to give USJ the lead for good with 2:24 remaining.

Harding made one last attempt to tie the game, but on a fourth and three from the USJ 27, Chick’s pass to Austin Mitchell fell incomplete giving the Bruins the win.

Harding (3-1) will face St. George’s (3-2) next week. The Eagles pounded St. Benedict Friday night, 42-7.

NOTES:

There were problems with the game clock, with 22 seconds running off after Harding scored in the third quarter to take a 21-17 lead. During the extra point attempt, the clock continued to run and no one caught it. With 2:24 remaining in the game, the clock was turned off and time was kept on the field.

Two crucial mistakes aided the Lions defeat. Early in the fourth quarter with a third down and less than a yard to go, Harding QB Drew Chick lined up in the shotgun and attempted a sweep where he was thrown for a loss. Harding’s coaching staff has to be questioned for not calling a QB sneak in that situation.

Later in the fourth, Harding’s Ben Rogers was flagged for a personal foul after a late hit on USJ’s Austin Martindale. That play came back to haunt the Lions when Martindale caught a 22-yard TD pass with 8:24 remaining to give the Bruins a 24-21 lead.

Considering the inconsistency of Tennessee’s placekicker Daniel Lincoln, the Vols might want to give a look at USJ’s Will Purcell, who boomed a 44-yard field goal in the first quarter with plenty of distance to spare.

Harding’s Hunter Crosley had the hit of the night, cleaning the clock of USJ’s Eric Dietz in the third quarter.
