Vols Get Ho-Hum Win Against UAB

As expected, the University of Tennessee got a win against UAB Saturday, defeating the winless Blazers 35-3 before 98,205 at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville. But it was far from an impressive victory, with quarterback Jonathan Crompton throwing two interceptions and an offense that generally looked rudderless.

While the Vols may have put aside a terrible loss to the UCLA Bruins in the season opener, they were quickly reminded of it when BYU absolutely annihilated the Bruins 59-0.

The Volunteers were able to amass 548 yards of total offense against the under-sized Blazers defense, most of it coming in the second half after head coach Phil Fulmer committed almost entirely to the running game.

Tennessee suffered mental breakdowns and were called for eight penalties, mistakes a veteran offense shouldn’t have. The defense had its issues too, with missed tackles and dropped interceptions. At times in the first half the secondary looked clueless, a recurring problem among Vols’ defensive backs.

Crompton finished the day going 19-for-31 for 240 yards, two touchdowns and two picks. Crompton gave way to Nick Stephens late in the fourth quarter after the Vols had the game well in hand. Crompton has now completed just over 50% of his passes for the season, going 38-for-72 and 429 yards.

Running back Arian Foster had a solid day, gaining 100 yards on 12 carries but left the game due to an ankle injury. Tennessee gained 266 yards on the ground with backups Lennon Creer, Tauren Poole and Montario Hardesty getting 24 carries collectively for 164 yards and three TDs.

Wide receiver Gerald Jones caught both of Crompton’s TD passes on corner patterns in the end zone. Lucas Taylor had a good day, catching nine passes for 132 yards. The Vols also got more work in for tight end Brandon Warren, the transfer from Florida State. Warren caught two passes for 48 yards.

It’s hard to gauge what improvements were made considering the Vols played against a team whose starters would be lucky to make the third string for Tennessee.

After the game, Fulmer promised improvement on both sides of the ball. It’s hard to imagine the Vols will improve enough to beat the tougher teams remaining on their schedule.

With their most difficult opponents on the horizon, beginning next week against No. 4 Florida, Tennessee will have to make dramatic improvement if they are going to have any chance of defeating the Gators.

NOTES:

Defensive tackle Dan Williams has a new nickname: Offsides.

Tight end Luke Stocker had three dropped passes Saturday.

The announced crowd of 98,205 was actually much less according to reports. Estimates had the actual attendance closer to 85,000, nearly 20,000 less than what was expected.

Athletic Director Mike Hamilton attempted to explain the low attendance, citing high fuel prices and excessive heat, but neither was the real reason. Apathy is beginning to set in and fans have grown weary of continued mediocre results.

In addition, the university implemented an idiotic policy of charging students for tickets this season.

The game against Florida will be televised by CBS as the SEC Game of the Week. Kick off is set for 3:30 p.m. ET.
