This week’s Florida-Tennessee contest got a lot more interesting when Gators linebacker Brandon Spikes made several disparaging remarks regarding the Volunteers. Spikes went as far to say the Vols’ were “quitters” and just gave up last season during Florida’s 59-20 beat down of Tennessee in Gainesville.
Mo at SEC Sports Fan posted the full article which can be viewed here.
Despite Spikes comments I still don’t like Tennessee’s chances Saturday. The Gators have exhibited very few weaknesses while the Vols’ seem to be rudderless and playing without passion.
Granted, bulletin board material like this could provide some extra incentive for Tennessee to start performing up to their ability, at least it should. When a player on an opposing team starts questioning your manhood, that’s the ultimate insult.
There isn’t a football player on this earth that likes having his balls questioned. If ever there was a game the Vols’ need to buck up and show the college football world they have a pair, it’s this week.
A victory against the Gators would propel them back into the Top 25 and give them a huge step up in the SEC East race. But considering how poorly Tennessee has played thus far I honestly don’t know if any amount of incentive will help them against the No. 4 Gators.
If head coach Phil Fulmer is the great motivator as he’s come to be known, he should vocalize Spikes comments at every opportunity during this week’s preparation.
Playing the Gators is important enough with so much at stake but the added bonus of silencing your critics – and the opposing team – makes winning a game of this magnitude that much sweeter.
Are the Vols’ quitters as Spikes suggested? We’ll find out Saturday in Knoxville.

Manny Ramirez asks: “What’s the big deal?”
thanks, i agree with your take Moondog. I still wouldn’t put money on the vols. just hard to see tebow losing to a team QB’d by jonathan crompton. on the other hand, it’s also hard to see the vols losing with the insults on the table. will certainly be interesting…
