Are the Nittany Lions Any Good? I Have No Idea
Published by MoonDog on September 22, 2008
Penn State had one of the most tumultuous offseasons of any program in the nation, enduring what seemed like an endless amount of bad news regarding player arrests.
But despite all of the off the field incidents, the Nittany Lions have compiled a 4-0 record to start the 2008 season and are currently ranked No. 12 in the AP and USA Today Top 25 polls.
There’s just one problem though - Penn State hasn’t played a team with a winning record. Their four opponents - Coastal Carolina, Oregon State, Syracuse and Temple - have a combined record of 5-10 and only the Chanticleers (that’s Coastal Carolina’s nickname, whatever a Chanticleer is) have a .500 record.
So just how good are these Nittany Lions? I don’t have a clue and neither does anyone else. We’ll get a better idea this week when the cupcake portion of the Penn State schedule comes to an abrupt halt.
The Nittany Lions open up Big 10 play against No. 22 Illinois at Happy Valley in a nationally televised game. If Penn State can take care of business against the Illini, then maybe we can say this is a pretty good Nittany Lions team.
The latest AP and USA Today Top 25 polls have been released and Vanderbilt is ranked No. 21 in the AP and No. 25 in the USA Today.
This is the first time the Commodores have been ranked in the Top 25 since Washington crossed the Delaware.
OK, so it hasn’t been that long. Vandy enters the Top 25 after a 24-year absence, compiling a 4-0 record against pretty good competition, including two wins against SEC rivals South Carolina and Ole Miss.
But like Penn State, the schedule will get much tougher with remaining games against No. 15 Auburn, No. 4 Florida, No. 3 Georgia and No. 16 Wake Forest - ouch. We’ll find out just how good Vanderbilt is in the not too distant future.
LSU and Auburn played what has become a typical LSU-Auburn game Saturday night with the Bayou Bengals getting a late touchdown to defeat Auburn 26-21. LSU’s Charles Scott is a man - period. The junior running back rushed for 132 yards on 21 carries against a really good Auburn defense.
LSU may also have found their new starting quarterback in the person of Jarrett Lee. He looked terrible in the first half throwing an interception that was returned for a touchdown to give Auburn a 14-3 halftime lead.
But Lee came on in the second half to pass for 182 yards and two touchdowns, tossing the game winner to Brandon Lafell with only 1:03 left in the game.
LSU moved up to No. 5 in both Top 25 polls giving the SEC three of the top five spots. The other two Top 5 SEC teams, Georgia and Florida, looked impressive Saturday in their wins against Arizona State and Tennessee respectively.
The SEC has six teams among the Top 25, most of any conference. USC remains atop both polls followed by Oklahoma. Alabama moved into the Top 10 in both polls after their 49-14 beat down of Arkansas.
The Missouri Tigers come in at No. 6 in both polls and quarterback Chase Daniel has to be considered the early front runner for the Heisman Trophy. Daniel has completed 101-of-133 passes for 1412 yards and 12 touchdowns.
If Daniel maintains his current pace, he’ll pass for over 4200 yards and 36 touchdowns. Considering the Tigers are expected to be in the race for the BCS national championship this season, Daniel has clearly established a leg up in the Heisman race.
