Big Orange Roundtable Vol(ume) 12
Published by MoonDog on September 22, 2008
Curveballs For Jesus hosts this week’s version of the Big Orange Roundtable, also known as the “Debacle on the Hill.”
After Tennessee’s less than spirited performance against the Gators, we’re tasked this week to address the calls for Phil Fulmer’s head, an anemic offense and a special teams unit that most definitely needs to be riding the short bus.
At the end of the post you’ll find links to the other sites’ answers to this week’s questions.
1. The Vols made some costly on-field mistakes that would have kept them in the hunt, and while they might not have resulted in a win, they at least cost us a chance to win the game. The two biggest mistakes, of course, were the fumble and interception by Crompton in the red zone. Vent your anger and frustration here.
I’ve already addressed this subject, which can be viewed here.
2. Speaking of special teams, Brandon James ended up punishing the Vols for fifty-two yards on a kick return and for ninety-two yards and a touchdown on his two punt returns. What are your thoughts on the decision to kick to James?
Poor coaching decisions? No way! Not from our coaching staff. Another in a long line of poor decisions, and not just this year but over the past five seasons.
Considering James returned a punt for a touchdown last season in the Gators 59-20 beat down of the Vols’ in Gainesville, it makes you wonder if anyone brought up that fact during film study.
Fulmer’s poor decisions in the kicking game over the years are so numerous I’ve lost count.
3. The boo birds were back on Saturday, and there was plenty to boo about. There were quite a few throughout the game, but the loudest came when the team was booed when Tebow took the Gators into the Victory Formation. What are your thoughts on fans booing our coaches/players on our home field?
I have no problem with it. The fans paid good money to watch the Vols’ get embarrassed on national television. Don’t give me this bullshit about college players not being paid to perform and thus, shouldn’t be subjected to the fans ire.
That being said, I honestly don’t believe it was directed at the players so much as it was Fulmer and the coaching staff. I’d boo loudly too after watching another comedy of errors from an obviously ill-prepared staff.
4. In addition to the boo birds, there is another thing that is very aggravating to me about some Vols’ fans and really sports fans in general. There were people leaving the stadium so fast that you would have thought real live gators had been let loose into the stands. Explain why you are or are not a leaver?
I don’t have a problem with anyone leaving early – I would have left after the first quarter because the game was ostensibly over at that point.
When I got back home, I’d call Mike Hamilton and ask if the additional money being spent on refurbishments to the FUCKING FIELD ENTRANCE is the key element in bringing this program back to national prominence.
5. I am going to call this the “Quarterbacks and Coaches” question. All I want to know is, where the heck do we go now with our current quarterbacks and coaches?
We’re not going anywhere. We’re going to stay the course. We’re going to work like heck and get better. Dave Clawson will start to open up the playbook and utilize some triple reverse options that worked at Richmond.
John Chavis will watch game film for the first time since 1998 and read the memos on known methods to defeat the opposition. Whoever the hell is coaching the special teams will inform the players that tackling is NOT an option.
Our quarterback situation is in good shape too. We’ll continue to keep the fans on the edge of their seats with decent looking drives just until we reach the red zone when suddenly, we’ll turn the ball over or commit several stupid penalties.
If for some strange reason we don’t shoot ourselves in the foot and actually have an opportunity to put three points on the board, we’ll send in Daniel Lincoln to attempt a 22-yard field goal.
The lad will calmly kick the ball 37 yards into section D, located perpendicular to the left upright, killing any hope the Vols’ had at gaining some momentum.
We’ll continue to stay on this prescribed course because, well, that’s all we know how to do.
6. In closing, how do you see this weekend’s game against Auburn unfolding?
The Vols’ are going to get their asses crunched again. And there isn’t a damn thing they can do about it. The Tigers are coming off a huge loss to LSU, a game they had won until Jarrett Lee connected with Brandon Lafell for an 18-yard touchdown with only 1:03 left in the game.
Auburn’s defense is better than Florida’s and while they aren’t a juggernaut offensively, they have a solid running game and one of the better coaches in Tommy Tuberville. The Tigers will wash away the bad memories of their loss to LSU with a dominating performance against the Vols’.
