Don’t Worry T.O., I Still Love You
Published by MoonDog on September 29, 2008
Everyone is in an uproar over Cowboys wide receiver Terrell Owens’ comments following the Washington Redskins 26-24 victory over Dallas.
According to reports, Owens was asked if he was given enough opportunities to get his hands on the ball during Sunday’s loss.
When asked if offensive coordinator Jason Garrett called enough plays designed to get him the ball Owens said, “I would say no. I’m a competitor, and I want the ball.”
“There were some opportunities there, and there were some opportunities there where they were holding and the refs just didn’t call it. You can’t blame the refs; we just didn’t make the plays.”
“Everybody recognized that I wasn’t really getting the ball in the first half,” Owens said. “I’m pretty sure everybody watching the game recognized it, people in the stands recognized it, I think my team recognized it. I didn’t quit. I kept fighting and trying to running my routes and trying to get open.”
Apparently T.O.’s honesty didn’t sit well with the media, causing mostly negative reactions among the pundits.
Pose this same question to Jerry Rice, Cliff Branch, Sterling Sharpe, Cris Carter, Michael Irvin, Chad Johnson, Randy Moss, Steve Smith – I could go on indefinitely. Their answers would essentially be the same as T.O.’s response.
And it’s the right answer too. What else was T.O. supposed to say?
When you have a wide receiver, running back or tight end on the roster that can change the outcome of the game, you’re going to get the ball to those players as often as possible.
In T.O.’s case, it’s more about perception than anything else. Anything he utters that remotely sounds negative is going to be blown out of proportion.
I’ll tell you this much, if there’s a player on my team that’s satisfied with getting a limited number of touches, I don’t want him on my roster. Terrell Owens is passionate, sometimes to a fault, but I’d rather have that type of player than one who isn’t.
Give me a guy that’s competitive and wants the ball and I’m going to win games. There isn’t a team in the NFL that doesn’t want the same.

His comments are what they are. The relevant point is that the Cowboys played worse BECAUSE they tried to force-feed the ball to T.O. It’s understandable that they would try to get him some touches, but the Skins played him with safety help virtually every down…and left space for other receivers.
It’s worth noting that they beat Green Bay fairly easily with his 2 catches for 17 yards. By the way, Marion Barber had 31 TOUCHES in that win. On Sunday, he had only 8 carries and 2 receptions. What about Barber’s touches?
It’s OK that T.O. wants the ball, but there’s a reason that he isn’t responsible for calling the plays.
