September Traffic Rankings For Sports Blogs
Published by MoonDog on October 2, 2008
If you’re a stats freak, and if you’re in to sports it’s a good bet you are, you’ve noticed sites around the net posting lists of monthly traffic results for sports blogs. Most I’ve seen don’t accurately reflect individual site statistics because not every site uses the same tracking script.
Virtually all sports blogs can be found at Alexa and Quantcast, with the former being my personal favorite. Most sites can be tracked using Google Ad Planner and Compete as well, but the convoluted means of compiling data those sites use generally skews the actual traffic numbers.
There are multiple criteria used to measure traffic to any website: unique page views, total page views, total unique visitors, cookies – I could go on. While Alexa is widely accepted, it’s generated traffic rankings aren’t real time.
In reality, site statistics can’t be viewed in real time, but Quantcast does the best job of providing near real time information, compiling daily figures that have proven to be accurate, at least in my case.
When it gets down to the nut cutting, the usual suspects occupy the top five every month, with Deadspin leading the way and by a very large margin. The only way Deadspin is going to lose it’s grip on the top spot as the most viewed sports blog is if someone over there forgets to renew the domain name. I don’t anticipate that happening.
Deadspin had over 12 million global page views in September and was visited by more than 3.85 million people. Their Quantcast rank is 1930, and to give you an idea how strong that is, Fox Sports has a traffic rank of 106, with 8.5 million visitors in September.
With Leather came in second with 3.076 million global page views and 1.602 million visitors. MLB Trade Rumors was third with 2.070 million global page views and 1.385 million visitors. The Big Lead came in fourth with 1.769 million global page views and just over 850,000 visitors.
Sports by Brooks came in fifth, having the second most global page views with over 5 million and 941,000 visitors. SBB also had the highest page views per visit with 5.36, with Deadspin coming in second at 3.20. The average page views per visit for all sports blogs is a little less than 2.0
Some other sites of note include Epic Carnival, with nearly 61,000 global page views and just over 34,000 visitors. Fellow Tennessee Vols fan Losers With Socks had over 119,000 global page views and nearly 75,000 visitors. Another Tennessee Vols site, Third Saturday in Blogtober, had over 41,000 global page views and just over 24,000 visitors.
My friend Thomas at Your Mother Slept With Wilt Chamberlain had 21,000 global page views and nearly 14,000 visitors. The master of graphic design, LawVol and his site Gate 21 had just over 15,000 global page views and nearly 9,000 visitors.
And what about me you ask? I know you’ve been sitting on the edge of your seats waiting for the results. Not too bad actually. For a site that is entering it’s nine month of existence, the Great and Powerful MoonDog had a little over 40,000 global page views and nearly 23,000 visitors.
If you’re a site owner and aren’t currently set up with Quantcast, I’d suggest you do so. It’s free, easy to sign up and the tracking code is easy to insert into your site’s header. Visit Quantcast today and set your site up.

I know we utilize Quantcast for demographics, but the numbers you give for Epic Carnival are inaccurate (i.e. way low) when compared to Google Analytics and Statcounter, the two I use for most of our numbers.

I agree the numbers for EC seemed a bit low. I don’t know all the details about Quantcast and how they’re tracking script works, but it appears to be quite accurate for my site and many others.
I realize this isn’t scientific. Perhaps there isn’t a way for anyone to track a site’s traffic accurately. I don’t know.
