Harding Academy (Memphis, TN) wide receiver Marlon Brown, the nation’s No. 19 rated prep prospect, scored three touchdowns Friday night to lead the Lions past Davidson Academy (Nashville, TN) 35-27.

Brown, who is being recruited by Tennessee, Georgia, LSU, Florida and Ohio State scored twice in the first quarter as Harding (5-1) took a 21-7 lead. He caught a 76-yard pass from quarterback Phillip Branch to put the Lions on the board after Davidson scored on their opening drive.

Later in the first, Branch connected with James Adkins on a 15-yard touchdown pass to put the Lions up 14-7. After stopping the Bears on their ensuing possession, Davidson found out the hard way how dangerous Brown is on special teams.

Instead of kicking away from him, the Bears selected to give Brown an opportunity. It was a decision they would regret, with Brown scoring on a weaving 64-yard return to put Harding up 21-7.

In the second half Adkins would add another touchdown, this time on an 8-yard run to give the Lions a 28-14 lead. Brown wasn’t finished for the night either, scoring in the fourth quarter on a 1-yard run to put Harding out in front, 35-24.

Davidson placekicker Cory Sandlin connected on two field goals in the fourth quarter, one from 45 yards out and the other a 48-yarder. Davidson (4-2) outgained Harding 330-281, but Bears’ quarterback Jordan Hood committed the game’s only turnover, tossing an interception as the Bears were driving in the third quarter.

Branch completed 10-of-14 passes for 198 yards, connecting with Brown eight times for 173 yards.

Harding will face Bishop Byrne (2-4) next week at Byrne. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.

Marlon Brown enjoys Georgia, Tennessee visits despite losses.

“The trip to Knoxville was an unofficial visit. It was a very exciting trip. I met with the coaches and talked football. And I also met with Bruce Pearl (Vols basketball coach).

He is very intense and is really excited about me possibly coming there to play football and basketball. The game (Florida/UT football) was sad but all in all I had a good time.”

“It was amazing. I had a really good time. Saturday was really busy. We met with the academic people all day, and that went really good. Then I met with the basketball coaches.”

“Then we went to the game. I had a really good time even though they lost. I had a good time.”

He added, “I can’t really rate it, because it is my one and only official visit this year. I feel the same way about Georgia as I did before. Really good.”

Brown also plans to visit Ohio State, Florida, Tennessee and LSU before making his final decision.
