Cowboys Gave Too Much For Williams

A day after the worst 24-hour period in Cowboys history, Dallas owner and general manager Jerry Jones announced the acquisition of wide receiver Roy Williams from the Detroit Lions, just minutes before the trade deadline.

The Cowboys sent first, third and sixth-round picks in 2009 to the Lions in exchange for Williams and Detroit’s seventh-round pick in 2009.

Shortly after the deal was announced, Jones said Williams, whose contract was to expire at the end of the season, had agreed to a five-year deal with the Cowboys.

Williams has 17 catches for 232 yards and a touchdown for the Lions this season.

On Monday the Cowboys learned quarterback Tony Romo would miss at least four weeks with a broken pinkie on his right hand.

The injury news didn’t stop there, with punter Matt McBriar being lost for the season with a fractured right ankle he suffered in the Cowboys overtime loss against Arizona on Sunday.

Rookie running back Felix Jones will miss between two and four weeks with a partially torn hamstring and wide receiver Sam Hurd will miss the rest of the season after it was announced his injured right ankle will require surgery.

Dallas’ trade for Williams is perplexing to say the least, considering the Cowboys having greater needs on defense.

The Cowboys have Terrell Owens, Patrick Crayton and Miles Austin to fill the wide receiver positions while Pro Bowlers Jason Witten and Marion Barber provide additional options in the passing game.

Third-string running back Tashard Choice has plenty of potential and will prove to be a pleasant surprise while Felix Jones recovers from his hamstring injury.

Dallas didn’t need to make this move for a wide receiver who hasn’t played up to his potential since he was drafted by the Lions in 2004.

The Cowboys do have future needs at wide receiver, but they could have easily met those needs with any of their first three picks in the 2009 draft.

With cornerback Terence Newman recovering from sports hernia surgery and Tuesday’s announcement that cornerback Adam Jones will be suspended for at least four games, Jerry Jones needed to make a move to bolster the defense.

In addition, strong safety Roy Williams is recovering from a fractured forearm and is still at least two weeks from returning to action. That leaves cornerback Anthony Henry and free safety Ken Hamlin as the Cowboys only experienced players in the secondary.

Without Adam Jones, Newman and the injured Williams, the Cowboys will have to use rookies Mike Jenkins and Orlando Scandrick to fill the voids while Alan Ball, a seventh-round pick in 2007, will also play more.

Williams’ presence may also serve as a detriment considering how the potentially volatile Owens may react. Whether Owens will view Williams’ addition as a move to help the team or as someone that will limit his touches remains to be seen.

While the Cowboys succeeded in creating a splash with the acquisition of Williams, it wasn’t a splash they needed. I can’t help but think this trade had more to do with offsetting the bad publicity created by the Adam Jones incident than filling a need.

Dallas gave up a good chunk of the future in trading for a player that isn’t going to serve an immediate purpose. The Cowboys are soon going to discover the only winner in this deal were the Lions.

Because of the Adam Jones suspension, the Cowboys will receive Tennessee’s fifth-round pick in next year’s draft to complete the teams’ April trade. Had Jones made it through the season without any problems, the Cowboys would have surrendered their 2009 sixth-round pick to the Titans.

Dallas Signed Punter Sam Paulescu to Replace Matt McBriar

Dallas Signed Punter Sam Paulescu to Replace Matt McBriar

Dallas has signed punter Sam Paulescu to replace the injured Matt McBriar.

Paulescu was with the Cowboys in training camp last year and punted in one game in 2007 for Denver, averaging 44.2 yards on five attempts.

He was cut by the Broncos this summer after losing the punting job with Brett Kern. He averaged 49.6 yards per punt in five preseason attempts for Denver.

The move reunites Paulescu with special teams coach Bruce Read. They were together at Oregon State where Paulescu became the first punter in the history of the school to earn All-Pac 10 honors. He averaged 42.7 yards per punt at Oregon State.

As somebody who has watched Roy Williams closely since he’s come to the NFL, I can tell you as a Lions fan, good riddance…

The dude is a pansy and is not a #1 receiver in the league…

    good read Moon

Thanks dude. Considering how much the Cowboys gave up for him, hopefully they didn’t acquire a pansy for three draft picks. I could have acquired a pansy with one late round pick.

On top of being a pansy, he will be the third option for the Cowboys. So the fact that they’re willing to give up three draft picks for a guy who will be the third option on your offense is mind blowing! But that’s Jerry Jones for you.

I’m really not too surprised by any of this. I’ve said for years that the Cowboys’ biggest weakness is their GM; they aren’t winning playoff games this year either with the team(?) he has put together.
