Gay Scores At The Buzzer To Defeat Magic
Published by MoonDog on November 1, 2008
Rudy Gay scored as time expired to give the Memphis Grizzlies a come from behind 86-84 win over the Orlando Magic Friday night at the FedEx Forum in Memphis.
After the Magic had turned the ball over with 1.9 seconds remaining, Memphis called time out to set up the game winner.
Gay came around a screen by Marc Gasol and nailed an 18-foot jumper over the Magic’s Keith Bogan just as the horn sounded. Memphis overcame a 15-point third quarter deficit to capture their first win of the season.
Gay scored 14 of his 29 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Grizzlies rally.
O.J. Mayo scored 17 points and grabbed six rebounds for Memphis, while Gasol added 10 points. Darrell Arthur got his first start of the young season and grabbed 10 rebounds.
Rashard Lewis led the Magic with 23 points, while Hedo Turkoglu finished with 18 and seven assists. Dwight Howard had 14 points and 14 rebounds and Jameer Nelson added 11 points.
“I don’t want to settle for just being a young team,” said Gay. “I’ve lost for two years. I want to win.”
“The whole building knows he’s getting the ball and he delivered,” the Grizzlies Hakim Warrick said. “That’s what great players do.”
Orlando had the ball and the chance to win the game with 2.8 seconds remaining. But Hedo Turkoglu’s inbounds pass sailed over Dwight Howard’s head and into the hands of Kyle Lowry under the basket.
“Marc (Gasol) did a great job not letting Dwight get the lob,” Lowry said. “I was just in the right place at the right time.”
Memphis held Orlando to 25-percent shooting in the second half after the Magic torched them with 60-percent shooting in the first two periods.
“We fought and we took them out of their pick-and-rolls,” Grizzlies coach Marc Iavaroni said. “They were hurting us in the first half. We straightened it out and the guys responded. That’s a good sign for a young team.”
There were 24 lead changes and 14 ties, most of which came in the fourth quarter. Warrick’s two free throws tied the score at 84 with 1:08 left.
“We’ve got to be scrappy,” Warrick said. “We’re young but I think we imposed our will on them down the stretch.”
Lowry gave Memphis a huge lift off the bench. His fast-break lay-in with 5:32 left gave the Grizzlies a 76-74 lead and capped a 13-0 Memphis run.
“We’re on a mission to play hard every night,” Lowry said. “We want to make sure there are no blowouts.”
Gasol got under Howard’s skin midway through the second period after his physical play frustrated Howard into a technical foul. Gasol fought Howard throughout the game and made several strong moves to the basket on offense.
The Grizzlies won’t get a chance to enjoy their first victory for long. Memphis travels to Chicago on Saturday to face the Bulls and former Memphis Tigers star Derrick Rose.
The Bulls (1-1) got smoked in Boston Friday night, 96-80. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. Central.
