Grizzlies Get First Road Win Against Warriors
Published by MoonDog on November 8, 2008
Rudy Gay scored 23 points to lead five players in double figures and the Memphis Grizzlies used a strong second half to defeat the Golden State Warriors 109-104 Friday night in Oakland.
The Grizzlies picked up their first road win of the season and beat Golden State for the second time this week, getting a 90-79 victory over the Warriors Monday night in Memphis.
Memphis had their best offensive production of the young season, going over the century mark for the first time this year.
Rookie O.J. Mayo added 20 points and nine rebounds while Hakim Warrick tossed in 19 points and grabbed 10 boards off the bench.
Memphis led 93-81 early in the fourth quarter but had to hold off a late charge by the Warriors, who closed within 97-96 with 3:36 left.
On the Grizzlies’ next two possessions, Marc Gasol made two free throws and Warrick followed with a dunk. Gay iced the game with a 3-pointer that made it 104-98 with 55 seconds remaining.
“When we did that, everybody was scoring, everybody was getting dunks and we were playing freely,” Gay said of the Grizzlies’ 33-point third quarter. “When we play more hesitant [we struggle]. We played free and we got that lead and it was easy to score.”
The Grizzlies’ (3-3) overcame terrible officiating, being whistled for 31 fouls including two technicals and an ejection of forward Darko Milicic in the second quarter.
Milicic was in the game to spell Gasol, who picked up his third foul earlier in the quarter on a phantom call.
With 6:24 left in the second, the Warriors Marco Belinelli drove to the basket on a break away when Gasol was called for holding. Replays clearly showed Gasol never touched Belinelli has he attempted the shot.
Mayo lead the Grizzlies with a strong third quarter. He had 11 points and two assists to help spark runs of 17-6 and 10-0 to help Memphis take control. Mayo’s 16-foot jumper with 4.4 seconds left put the Grizzlies ahead 81-74.
Fellow rookie Darrell Arthur had another solid game, adding 13 points and 12 rebounds leading Memphis to a 55-41 advantage on the boards.
“That’s the kind of balance that we need to have and show, night in and night out,” Mayo said. “The second half, we got stops and it really opened up the game for us.”
Stephen Jackson had 27 points to lead Golden State (2-4), while Andris Biedrins had 23 points and 12 rebounds.
It’s the 13th consecutive double-double by Biedrins, the longest active streak in the NBA and the longest by a Warriors player since Nate Thurmond had 13 straight in 1973.
Memphis continues their four-game road trip Sunday night when they face the Denver Nuggets. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. Central.
