Lady Vols Kick Off Exhibition Season

The Tennessee Lady Vols began their quest for a ninth national championship with a 135-55 exhibition win over the Carson-Newman Lady Eagles Thursday night at Thompson-Boling Arena.
Highlighting the nation’s most talented recruiting class, Tennessee got an opportunity to showcase the freshman coach Pat Summitt will need this season to provide significant contributions.
Glory Johnson, Alyssia Brewer, Shekinna Stricklen, Alicia Manning and Amber Gray all had impressive debuts, with Johnson scoring 33 points and grabbing 14 rebounds to lead six Lady Vols’ in double figures.
Brewer got a double-double with 14 points, 13 rebounds and seven steals. The Lady Vols opened the game with a 17-4 run, lead by Kelley Cain’s nine points. Cain finished with 18 points on 8-of-10 shooting.
The 135-point explosion was second only to the 144 points the Lady Vols scored against Dynamo Kiev in an exhibition game on November 5, 2000.
Mandy Mendenhall led the Lady Eagles with 13 points and eight rebounds.
The Lady Vols will play their final exhibition game of the preseason on November 9 when they host Love & Basketball.
Tennessee will begin their defense of the national championship in earnest on November 15 against the University of San Francisco. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m. Eastern at Thompson-Boling Arena.
