John Wall Set To Visit Memphis
Published by MoonDog on November 13, 2008
John Wall, one of the nation’s top rated prep basketball players, has scheduled an official visit to the University of Memphis this Saturday when the Tigers open their regular season against Fairfield.
Wall, a 6-4 point guard from Raleigh, NC, is considered to be the No. 2 rated prep prospect in the nation by Scout and is listed as the overall top prospect by Rivals.
The Tigers are thought to be among Wall’s favorites along with Kansas and Baylor.
He made an official visit to Kansas on September 20 and Memphis will be the second official visit he’s made. Wall is among five of the nation’s top seven prospects that have yet to announce a decision.
Other top recruits include Xavier Henry, a 6-6 shooting guard from Oklahoma City, Derrick Favors, rated as the No. 1 prep prospect by Scout, is a 6-9 center from Atlanta, Lance Stephenson, a 6-5 small forward from Brooklyn, NY, and Dominic Cheek, a 6-5 small forward from Jersey City, NJ.
Memphis is among the schools pursuing all four, with Henry thought to be leaning towards the Tigers over Kansas. Henry’s father played for Kansas when Memphis head coach John Calipari was an assistant on Larry Brown’s staff in the mid-80’s.
Further adding to the speculation Henry is nearly a lock to attend Memphis, his older brother C.J. walked-on at Memphis this fall.
The elder Henry was a former proposed Kansas walk-on and 17th overall pick in the 2005 Major League Draft. The New York Yankees are contractually obligated to pay for Henry’s college education.
It doesn’t come as a surprise the Tigers and Jayhawks are fighting for the services of all these prospects.
The two met last April in one of the most exciting national championship games in recent memory.
Memphis has built a solid program under the guidance of Calipari, posting a remarkable 104-10 record over the past three seasons, including two trips to the Elite Eight and last year’s berth in the national final.
