Remembering Our Honored Dead During Christmas
Published by MoonDog on December 24, 2008
A Maine business man and school children make it a point each year to lay wreaths upon the graves of those interred at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C.
All of these wreaths – some 5,000 – are donated by the Worcester Wreath Company of Harrington, Maine.
The owner, Merrill Worcester, not only provides the wreaths, but covers the cost of transporting them as well. He’s done this since 1992. Also, most years, groups of Maine school kids combine an educational trip to Washington, D.C. with this event to help out.
Making this even more remarkable is the fact that Harrington is among the poorest towns in the state of Maine.
This story had a dual meaning for me. Being a veteran, I’m very grateful to Mr. Worcester for this most gracious act. Being that I’m in the trucking business, I know how much he has to spend for transportation – it ain’t cheap.
Next year, I’m going to ask Mr. Worcester if my company can transport the wreaths to Arlington at no cost to him.
Please remember the members of our military this holiday season. Many of them are in remote locations around the globe and won’t get to spend time with their family and friends.
Big thanks to Lisa Horne for bringing this story to my attention.
