Lions At Least Get First Pick in the Draft
Published by MoonDog on December 29, 2008
The Detroit Lions made NFL history on Sunday, although it wasn’t the type of history any team wants to make. Detroit became the first team since the 1976 Tampa Bay Buccaneers to finish a season winless.
Detroit also became the first team to lose more than 15 games in a season, topping the Bucs 14 loses in their inaugural season.
With teams like Atlanta and Miami rebounding from terrible seasons in 2007 to make this year’s playoffs, the Lions can point to those teams’ success and strive for a major turnaround in 2009.
Detroit will have the first pick in the NFL draft, and perhaps the Lions can start the process of regaining respectability.
Of course, these are the Lions we’re talking about. Detroit is a moribund team with many holes to fill. One draft isn’t going to reshape the roster in such a way to make the Lions a playoff team next season.
With former GM Matt Millen long gone and head coach Rod Marinelli probably out the door as well, Detroit can use this season as an opportunity to learn from its many mistakes. Whether owner William Clay Ford actually learns anything from this season remains to be seen.
Considering Ford hasn’t appeared to learn anything from Detroit’s previous dismal season’s suggests he might not be capable of making the right decisions.
Despite all of the organization’s missteps, Detroit has positioned themselves quite well in the coming draft.
With the additional first-round pick Detroit secured from Dallas in the trade that sent Roy Williams to the Cowboys, the Lions can select players that can help build the foundation for the future.
The Lions future can only get brighter. After losing every game in 2008, even three or four wins next season would be considered marked improvement. If Detroit selects wisely in the coming draft, who knows, they might actually vie for a playoff spot in 2009.
Then again, they could select two wide receivers. Let’s hope the Lions use the opportunity to make the team decidedly better next season. After all, there are only so many jokes you can write about a winless team.

The problems within this Lions’ organization are so infinite ! That in reality it’s hard to see how they can raise themselves from the depths of infamy. From ownership on downwards there’s been a complete lack of accountability. And all one has heard has been the usual rhetoric and not much else by way of a sound byte much less common sense.
Now with all the talk of Huizenga probably still looking to sell his stake in the Dolphins. One can expect Parcells to bolt should the new owner Stephen Ross not be all that amenable to allowing the Big Tuna to run the show the way he sees fit.
The Lions should look to him to try and lift the fortunes of the franchise. He’s done it wherever he’s been ! I can bet Jerry Jones has got to be wondering what the f#&* went wrong against the Eagles ? The Cowboys were all the more deserving of their fate.
