Buckeyes Feeling BCS Blues Again
Published by MoonDog on January 6, 2009
Just when you think Ohio State’s BCS bowl miseries had come to end after embarrassing defeats in the last two national championship games, Texas’ Quan Cosby dashed across the goal line with 16 seconds remaining to lift the Longhorns past the Buckeyes 24-21 in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl on Monday night.
Ohio State appeared to erase the Longhorns’ 11-point lead entering the fourth quarter when they scored with 2:05 left on Daniel Herron’s 15-yard touchdown run to put the Buckeyes up 21-17.
Texas (12-1) overcame the deficit with a dramatic 11-play, 78-yard drive that was highlighted by a crucial fourth-and-3 conversion that replay officials had to confirm.
Two plays after the Longhorns barely made the necessary distance to move the chains, quarterback Colt McCoy connected with Cosby on a 26-yard pass for the game-winning score.
Cosby finished his career at Texas in grand fashion, catching 14 passes for 171 yards and two touchdowns. McCoy, the Heisman Trophy runner-up this year, completed 41-of-59 passes for 414 yards and accounted for all three of Texas’ touchdowns.
The Longhorns were denied a chance to play for the BCS national championship when they lost to Texas Tech on November 1.
The Red Raiders scored with 1 second remaining to defeat Texas 39-33 and prevented the Longhorns from winning the Big 12 South despite defeating No. 1 Oklahoma on October 11.
After the game Texas head coach Mack Brown emphatically stated he was going to vote the Longhorns No. 1 regardless of who wins the BCS title game between Oklahoma and Florida.
Last week Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham announced he was going to cast his vote for the Utes as the No. 1 team in the land after leading Utah to a 31-17 victory over Alabama in the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
Ohio State (10-3), a team that entered the 2008-09 season with national championship aspirations, lost their third straight BCS bowl game.
Although the Buckeyes were able to keep the high-powered Texas offense in check for most of the game, Ohio State was unable to stop the Longhorns when it mattered most.
The Buckeyes were another in a long list Big 10 teams to lose in a bowl game this season.
The Big 10 had a 1-6 record with only Iowa winning their game against South Carolina in the Outback Bowl. The Big Ten did absolutely nothing to improve its national reputation with the worst postseason performance in league history. The Big 10 has lost six consecutive BCS bowls.

I cannot believe this happened. Even though people say it was such a dramatic finish, I feel that Crosby jumping into the endzone and over-celebrating. Talk about a “picture perfect moment” that can easily be forgotten.
