Arizona’s First Super Bowl Leaves Only Five
Published by MoonDog on January 19, 2009
With the Arizona Cardinals victory over the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday to earn their first trip to the Super Bowl in franchise history, only five teams have yet to play in professional football’s grand game.
The Cleveland Browns, Jacksonville Jaguars, New Orleans Saints, Houston Texans and Detroit Lions haven’t made a Super Bowl appearance.
The Lions are second only to the Cardinals for the longest drought between championships, with Detroit’s last title coming in 1957.
The Cardinals haven’t won an NFL championship since 1947 when the franchise was in Chicago.
But now at least the Cardinals can remove their names from the short list of teams having never made a Super Bowl appearance.
Arizona will face Pittsburgh in Tampa on February 1 after the Steelers won the AFC championship by defeating Baltimore. Pittsburgh will make their seventh appearance in the NFLs championship game, second only to the Dallas Cowboys eight appearances.
Pittsburgh is seeking to become the first franchise with six Super Bowl victories, which would break the tie between the Steelers, 49ers and Cowboys with five Super Bowl victories each.
The Steelers have opened as an early 6 1/2 point favorite.
Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald has set the all-time post season receiving record, breaking Jerry Rice’s old mark. In just three games, Fitzgerald has 419 yards with one game remaining.

You are correct! My brain wasn’t functioning too well earlier this morning. I shall amend the post to reflect the correct number. Thanks for pointing this out.
