Super Bowl XLIII: Best Super Bowl Ever?

Published by MoonDog on February 2, 2009

I’ve been alive for every Super Bowl and can recall watching 35 of them, starting in 1969 when the Jets beat the Colts.

Many believe last year’s Super Bowl between New England and the New York Giants was the best ever, but Super Bowl XLIII may have just become the greatest in Super Bowl history.

I don’t know if Super Bowl XLIII qualifies as the best of all time, but it was one hell of a game regardless.

Arizona showed a lot of moxie after falling behind 20-7 with 2:11 left in the third quarter.

The Cardinals stormed back to take a 23-20 lead on a spectacular play when Larry Fitzgerald scored on a 64-yard pass from Kurt Warner with 2:37 remaining in the game. Fitzgerald finished with 7 receptions for 127 yards and two touchdowns.

The Steelers were not to be outdone, marching 78 yards in 8 plays to take the lead for good when Santonio Holmes made a fantastic catch in the corner of the end zone to give Pittsburgh a 27-23 lead with just 35 seconds left on the clock.

Holmes had four receptions on the Steelers’ game-winning drive and was named the game’s MVP.

He finished the game with nine catches for 131 yards and one touchdown.

Let’s not forget the most incredible play of the game – Steelers’ linebacker James Harrison’s 100-yard interception return just before the half.

Harrison’s return was the longest play in Super Bowl history, but more importantly, kept Arizona from scoring at least 3 points and possibly a touchdown that would have given the Cardinals the lead going into the locker room.

The previous longest play was Desmond Howard’s 99-yard kickoff return for Green Bay in Super Bowl XXXI.

Pittsburgh’s win gives the Steelers their sixth Super Bowl victory, most of any franchise in the NFL and breaks a three-way tie for most Super Bowl titles with the Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers.

There for a while, especially in the mid 80s and during most of the 90s, the Super Bowl had become anti-climatic. Looking at the history of the game, that period of time produced more blowouts than any other.

But since 2000, six of the 10 Super Bowls’ have been decided by seven points or less, and four have been decided in the last few minutes of the game.

The last two Super Bowls have epitomized what the game is supposed to be – super. Super Bowl XLIII wasn’t a particularly well-played game, but both teams played with passion and gave football fans what they want – a competitive game.

Super Bowl XLIII may not be the greatest ever, but I do know that the past two Super Bowls’ have been the best I’ve seen – and I’ve seen a lot.

It wasn’t the best Superbowl ever nor was it the worst . But for the few moments of brilliance by Fitzgerald and Harrison’s 100 yd scamper was there really anything that one’d say was actually thrilling ?

I thought that the pregame singing of the National Anthem by Jennifer Hudson was breathtaking. As for Springsteen and his the halftime show well it was average at best. The Boss has performed a lot better at lesser events.

I wish people could learn to differentiate an exciting 4th quarter from a good game.

Super Bowl 42 by far was the better Super Bowl from start to finish, and the ending was every bit as exciting, but even more so. Eli Manning did the unthinkable by responding to Brady’s clutch drive with one of his own, with some of the most miraculous plays ever, and in a situation where nothing less than a touchdown would suffice.

The Steelers had the luxury of trying to tie it with a Field Goal had they not gotten it into the endzone, and not to mention that the Steelers beat the 9-7 Cardinals, and lastly, the Steelers were the favorites and won. The Giants were 12 point underdogs against the 18-0 Pats.

Superbowl 43 featured three sloppy quarters that was all Steelers, and then when they failed to put the Cardinals away, it lead for a wild 4th quarter. Superbowl 42 was a tense, defensive battle for the first 3 quarters and then lead to a marvelous climax.

C’mon seriously, stop living for the moment and try to put some perspective on this. Which SuperBowl will better be remembered in 10 years?

It seems like the entire world has forgotten Super Bowl XXXVIII. That, in my mind, was the greatest Super Bowl ever. Even though I used to be a Pats fan, you can’t deny the facts. It was pretty close to the most perfect game I’ve ever seen played. It started off with defense, which made people think it was going to be a snooze fest. Then, at the end of both halves, it became on of the most high-octane scoring games I’ve ever seen, with the most lead changes in super bowl history in the 4th, and a combined score of 37 pts. in the final qtr. The patriots are playing to show the world that it is possible in this day and age to dominate the league, while the panthers, who had been 1-15 a couple yrs. prior, fighting for respectibility. Jake Delhomme was flawless and Tom Brady AND Adam Vinateri showed the world that they are clutch. Big bombs and long runs, very few penalties and turnovers, excessive offensive wizardy, more lead changes then any sb ever, and a thrilling finish makes this the consensus for greatest super bowl ever.

SB XXXVIII did not have the most lead changes.
The lead only changed hands 3 times.
Carolina speant alot of time catching up to NE but they only had the lead once.
SB XIV Pitt vs L.A. Rams, the lead actually changed hands 6 times.
It was 3-0 Pitt, ten the first lead change was 7-3 Rams.
The 2nd lead Changes was 10-7 Steelers.
Then the Rams tied it 10-10 then the 3rd lead change was 13-10 Rams.
Then the 4th lead change was 17-13 Steelers.
Then 5th lead change was 19-17 Rams then the 6th lead change was 24-19 Steelers.
    The final was 31-19 Steelers.

SB XLII Pats Giants had 4 lead changes.
3-0 Giants, then the first lead change was 7-3 Pats.
The 2nd lead change was 10-7 Giants, the 3rd lead change was 14-10 Pats then the 4th lead change was also the final 17-14 Giants.
