What’s The Big Deal About Phelps Smoking Weed?
Published by MoonDog on February 4, 2009
All the uproar created over the release of an image of Olympian Michael Phelps hitting a bong is a bit perplexing to the Great & Powerful one. Growing up as I did in the 60s and 70s, young people smoking weed at that time was as common as young people today playing video games.
I can appreciate Phelps’ status in the public eye and the potentially harmful message it may send to kids who look up to him. But Phelps or any other public figure isn’t responsible for raising someone’s child.
The fact Phelps smokes weed is no big deal considering what he could be indulging in. He could be a gun-toting, pit bull owner who runs a dog fighting business with his hood rat friends.
When I was a teenager my parents asked me how many kids attending my high school smoked marijuana. My response to them was “it would be easier if I told you who didn’t.”
I turned out alright, as did most everyone I went to high school with. Visit my Facebook page and there are 30 or more people listed as my friends I went to school with. Not one of them ended up as a strung out junkie living on the streets.
All of the propaganda the government put out about the dangerous effects of marijuana was just that – propaganda. If marijuana was so harmful, could it be legally prescribed to cancer and glaucoma patients?
Smoking cigarettes have far greater risks attached than smoking marijuana. The only difference of course is that cigarettes are legal and, oh by the way, the effects will probably kill you. I’ve never heard of anyone dying as a result of smoking marijuana.
I’d rather have my child smoke weed, be well-adjusted, well-educated and grow into a productive member of society as opposed to the alternatives.
Smoking weed isn’t going to prevent you from becoming any of the aforementioned. Smoking marijuana is not going to lead to a life of crime or cause someone to wind up as a junkie.
In fact, someone who smokes weed may one day become a self-employed business owner, running a successful transportation company and own a sports web site that continues to gain attention.
I don’t think Phelps needs to worry about his future being damaged to the point of no return over one photograph. But all these people who cast stones at Phelps over this incident are just being silly.
I’d be willing to bet some of the people who voiced their outrage over this matter were smoking big doobies’ back in the day. Some of them are probably tossing back single malt, 18-year old Scotch as I write this.
Lay off Michael Phelps. And hey Mike, if you know where I can score some good hydro…

My little sister works as a waitress at one of the Columbia, SC bars that Phelps has visited a few times–she says the guy is an absolute gentleman. He’s cool to the staff, tips well and is always cordial to fans and gawkers.
The great thing about South Carolina is just when you think there’s no way that the Palmetto State can make themselves into a bigger laughing stock they find a way to prove you wrong–obviously Phelps is being investigated for criminal charges because the Richland County Sheriffs’ department has eliminated all other crime in the area, and because none of the 25000+ students at the University of South Carolina would ever *think* about smoking pot. Oh, that’s right–South Carolina was #1 in the nation in violent crimes per capita in 2007–but if they can find a way to nail Phelps for pot smoking that’ll send a message to the gang bangers, meth addicts and other real criminals that they’re next…

Bingo. It’s ridiculous how big of a deal people are making about this.

the sad thing about the Phelps “pot scandal” is, that British tabloid could care less about whether or not it’s wrong that Phelps smoked pot (a year ago)… they’re just shooting for ratings, and unfortunately it worked

The big deal is that Phelps himself says he’…aspires to be a role model for kids’. I hardly think that this is what lil’ Johnny or Debby wants to see from their hero . Besides you seem to forget his corporate sponsors who’ve got millions riding on him as to his alleged wholesome persona .And when you sign on with these guys nowadays there tends to be a morals’ clause in those said contracts. Need I say anymore ? They’re the ones who count in the end. And if it’s to be believed there may well be some serious ramifications should the local law enforcement seek to press charges against him.
In the business of sports Moon Dog there are certain things that you can do without being caught and there are those that you can’t . This just happens to be one where Phelps has made a complete a*ss of himself despite the act of contrition.
