Mighty SEC Dominates Recruiting Battles
Published by MoonDog on February 6, 2009
College football’s most dominant conference has won three straight BCS national championships. Over the past two days, the Southeastern Conference has won it’s eighth straight recruiting title against all other conferences.
To win the battles on the field, your program must first win the battles for the nation’s most talented prep players. The SEC has proven yet again the overall strength of the conference, placing 10 of its 12 member teams in Scout’s and Rivals top 25 recruiting classes.
It wasn’t even close either. SEC teams landed 31 of the nation’s top 100 prospects, 20 five-star and 82 four-star prospects. The Pac 10 came in a distant second, with USC and UCLA leading the way.
Alabama, LSU and Georgia each signed consensus top 10 classes, with South Carolina, Auburn, Ole Miss, Arkansas, Tennessee, Florida and Mississippi State each landing very strong classes.
Only two SEC teams failed to sign at least one top 100 prospect, and only one member team failed to sign at least four four-star prospects.
Following the SEC and Pac 10 were the ACC, Big 10, Big 12 and Big East. North Carolina signed its best class in recent memory to lead all ACC teams. Ohio State landed a top 5 class to lead all Big 10 teams and Texas did the same to lead the Big 12.
Surprisingly, the top non-BCS conference was Conference USA, led by Central Florida. Memphis was the only team in C-USA to sign a five-star recruit, that being junior college defensive tackle Justin Thompson.
Several of the nation’s top prep players failed to make their decisions over the past two days and have indicated they will wait indefinitely to make their announcements.
Bryce Brown, a 6-0, 210-pound running back and Scout’s No. 1 rated prospect, is expected to sign with Miami but is also entertaining offers from Auburn, Clemson and Oregon.
Tight end Orson Charles is reportedly leaning toward Georgia, but has offers from Florida, Florida State, Tennessee and USC. Charles could make his announcement next week after he takes his official visit to USC.
David Oku, a one-time Tennessee commitment, has decided to announce his decision later this month. Oku, a 5-10, 185-pound all-purpose back is still considering Tennessee but also has Auburn and Syracuse among his list of favorites.
