Julius Peppers: Lost in the Crowd

In a free agency period where big contracts have been signed, Julius Peppers seems to have been a forgotten man.

After regressing in 2007 with a measly 2.5 sacks and 38 total tackles, the Carolina Panthers’ defensive end returned to his Pro Bowl form.

In 2008, Peppers racked up 14.5 sacks, 51 total tackles and 5 forced fumbles as he again became a terror for opposing offenses.

Since he entered the league as the second overall pick in the 2002 draft, Peppers has recorded 70.5 sacks and 25 forced fumbles while playing for the Panthers.

Peppers’ dreams of earning a lucrative free agency contract died when the Panthers opted to place their franchise tag on him.

Despite the chance of earning top money during the upcoming season, Peppers has publicly stated he is unhappy with the team’s decision and would request a trade.

But in these tough economic times, there may not be a team willing to go after this one-man wrecking crew. However, one such team could be the current media favorite, the New England Patriots.

Aside from the chance to play with one of the best franchises in the NFL, Peppers would have the chance to showcase his talents in a 3-4 defense rather than the 4-3 scheme he has been a part of since coming to the league.

The Patriots, with their recent transactions since the beginning of free agency, still remain $15 million below the salary cap.

As for the Panthers, shipping Peppers to the Patriots would keep him out of the NFC and limit the amount of times they would face him as an opponent.

The question becomes whether Peppers is a player the Patriots should pursue? The answer, simply put, is no.

There has to be some concern for any team when it comes to which version of Peppers is going to show up. The 2007 or 2008 model?

Another underlying concern is Peppers’ desire to get out of Carolina. The Panthers are on the verge of becoming a dominant force in the NFC, so why would he want to step away from an opportunity to be a part of that?

Though the Patriots have begun to show their age on defense, a free agent move like this would be a major departure for the franchise. Potentially its a transaction that might set them back if things do not work out as intended.

However, with the free agency period beginning to lose some steam, the Patriots or other suitors will need to kick it in gear if they want to land Peppers before the NFL draft.
