UConn-Purdue Matchup Marred By Cheating Allegations
Published by MoonDog on March 26, 2009
The Connecticut Huskies have arguably been the most dominant of any team in the men’s NCAA basketball tournament, blowing past Chattanooga and Texas A&M with ease during first and second round games.
But on Wednesday news broke of possible recruiting violations as reported by Yahoo! Sports, which sources claim former Huskies’ player Nate Miles was the centerpiece of the allegations.
Late Wednesday, Huskies’ head coach Jim Calhoun announced university officials will probe the possible recruiting violations.
Yahoo reported that Miles, a 6-7 guard from Toledo, Ohio, was given lodging, transportation, meals and representation by sports agent Josh Nochimson, and a UConn assistant coach knew about the relationship between the player and the agent.
The story cited interviews, documents obtained under Freedom of Information laws and other sources.
Oddly enough, UConn’s possible recruiting violations came as a result of a story Yahoo was working on regarding sports agents involvement with AAU players.
The timing of the report couldn’t have been worse for the Huskies.
Playing on Friday against a solid Purdue team was daunting enough, but now with possible sanctions looming on the horizon, will the Huskies perform as they have in the first two games of the tournament?
