2009 NFL Free Agent Signing Blunders
Published by JM Van Horn on April 15, 2009
With the NFL draft taking place in less than two weeks, the 2009 NFL free agent is coming to a close. Now is the perfect time to take a look back at those free agent signings that make you wonder what the owners or general managers were thinking.
Domonique Foxworth, Cornerback – Baltimore
Who would have thought that a cornerback who has not started more than 10 games in the NFL would be worth $16.5 million in guaranteed money and an overall deal worth $27 million? Apparently the Baltimore Ravens.
They must know something we don’t know about a cornerback who has produced four interceptions during his four-year career in the NFL. Maybe the third time will be the charm for Foxworth, but not likely.
Chalk this up to the Ravens having Ed Reed covering the deep middle to clean up the mistakes of the cornerbacks.
DeAngelo Hall, Cornerback – Washington
Another year, another team and a large contract for the troublesome DeAngelo Hall. Yes, Hall was on his best behavior for half a season, but does that earn him a reprieve from his past issues?
Let’s not forget, Hall’s performance dropped in the second half when he arrived in Washington. The $21.5 million guaranteed money may be a drop in the hat for Redskins owner, Daniel Snyder, but it is still a shame to waste it.
Terrell Owens, Wide Receiver – Buffalo
When Terrell Owens was on the market, everyone was speculating where he might end up. The Buffalo Bills came out of nowhere and snatched up the problematic wide receiver for a contract worth $6.5 million.
This would make sense for a team with a veteran quarterback, but not for a team like Buffalo. The Bills have a rising star in Trent Edwards, and even veteran quarterbacks like Jeff Garcia and Donovan McNabb where eventually unable to work with Owens.
Maybe the Bills are trying to sell tickets, but the fans and coaching staff will soon grow weary of Owens’ antics before the season is half over.
Albert Haynesworth, Defensive Tackle – Washington Redskins
The issue with this free agent signing is the amount of money Redskins owner Daniel Snyder shelled out to sign what many believed was the best player available in free agency.
But the fact is, Haynesworth has missed at least two games in every season since he was a rookie back in 2002.
When you look at the production of Haynesworth, you see a disturbing trend. The best two years of his seven-year career is when he had a chance to become a free agent. Could money have been the ultimate motivation?
Quite possibly.
Can you imagine how much money Haynesworth would have fetched on the open market if he had a career free of injuries and was consistent since his early days?
Haynesworth won’t be a complete bust with the Redskins, but he will have a hard time living up to the expectations a huge contract like his brings with it.
