Anquan Boldin Is Good As Gone

With less than a week before the NFL draft, wide receiver Anquan Boldin and the Arizona Cardinals appear to have a common goal. Both Boldin and the Cardinals want the contract issue settled one way or another before the draft.

Currently Boldin has been trying to get a long term contract with the Cardinals, but the two sides have not been able to narrow the gap. This has resulted in the Cardinals stating that they are willing to listen to trade offers from any team. All they want in return is a first and third-round pick.

When it comes to the location of a new home for Boldin, the usual suspects have been mentioned by those in the media. But what would these teams be getting in Boldin?

Boldin has solid first step and some of the best hands in the NFL. The only downside to Boldin is he does not have the same down the field speed like others at the top of his position.

Some question whether Boldin can be a No. 1 wide receiver for another team. To address those who aren’t convinced, take a look at Boldin’s first year in the NFL when he was not playing with Larry Fitzgerald.

Boldin had 101 receptions for 1,377 yards and 8 touchdowns. Here is how the first six years of Boldin’s career matches up with some other wide receivers in the game.

Anquan Boldin – 502 receptions for 6,496 yards and 40 touchdowns.

Randy Moss – 525 receptions for 8,375 yards and 77 touchdowns.

Terrell Owens – 432 receptions for 6,170 yards and 59 touchdowns.

Steve Smith – 344 receptions for 4,925 yards and 30 touchdowns.

Hines Ward – 425 receptions for 5,051 yards and 37 touchdowns

Jerry Rice – 446 receptions for 7,946 yards and 79 touchdowns.

Here are those teams who could have Boldin on their roster by draft day.

Philadelphia Eagles – Even though DeSean Jackson had a decent rookie year, the Eagles is still lacking a true No. 1 wide receiver. Philadelphia has 12 picks in the 2009 NFL draft and could find the right combination to bring Boldin to Philly, where the fans will love his style of play.

Baltimore Ravens – The Ravens are the current favorites to land Boldin according to recent reports. With the addition of Boldin to their wide receiver groups of an aging Derrick Mason and a disappointing Mark Clayton, some would favor the Ravens to win their division. What hurts their chances of landing him is they only have six picks in the 2009 NFL Draft.

Arizona Cardinals – Though the writing appears to be on the wall for Boldin’s ticket out of Arizona, there is still a chance he will return in 2009. If he does, there is no doubt that the Cardinals will have the top wide receiver group made up of Boldin, Larry Fitzgerald, and Steve Breaston.

New York Giants – Currently the Giants are showing more interest in the Browns Braylon Edwards than Boldin, but as we know, things can change. Boldin’s style of play would fit in perfectly with Giants fans. The Giants have 10 picks in the 2009 NFL draft to work with if they want to bring Boldin into the fold.

Regardless of what happens, it would appear Boldin’s days are numbered in Arizona. If the Cardinals are smart, they will want to keep him out of the NFC and ship him to the Ravens where he can help lead them to the playoffs.
