Brett Favre Released, But Not Gone For Now
Published by JM Van Horn on April 30, 2009
On Wednesday, quarterback Brett Favre was officially released by the New York Jets. This move ended the failed experiment in the Big Apple. When Favre officially announced his retirement on February 11, the Jets made plans for the future.
And those plans included taking USC quarterback Mark Sanchez with the fifth overall selection in last weekend’s draft. With his release, Favre is officially a free agent and able to sign with any team wishing to take a chance on him.
Reports are circulating out of New Jersey, specifically The Star Ledger, saying Favre asked for his unconditional release twice. Now, whether that means anything or not, only time will tell.
The question remains whether any teams are interested in taking a chance on a 39-year old quarterback?
Without a doubt, some teams will show some interest in the gunslinger, most notably the Minnesota Vikings. The Vikings did little to upgrade their quarterback position during the off-season, except for bringing in Sage Rosenfels.
In theory, Minnesota would be a perfect fit for Favre. He would have the chance to exact his revenge on the Green Bay Packers, while facing the hapless Detroit Lions, and partake in a quarterback showdown with the Chicago Bears and Jay Cutler.
However, bringing in Favre would not be what’s best for the Vikings organization. Not only would this set their search back for a future quarterback, Minnesota would only have him for one season, perhaps two at the most.
The only advantage Minnesota has in signing Favre is the fact New York released him, thus saving the Vikings from having to compensate the Jets.
We can expect the Favre reports to remain at a minimum until teams begin preparations for training camp. Once the season draws near the rumors will start to circulate, and Favre may crave the attention of the media as he has over the past several offseasons.
We can be sure that ESPN will lead the way, constantly updating us any time Favre touches a football. He will have his meetings with teams, like the Minnesota Vikings, and maybe even lead to preliminary contract talks.
Despite all of this, I suspect the Jets loss to the Dolphins in last season’s finale will be the last time we see the Hall of Fame quarterback leading a team on the field.
Favre will come to realize that he will need to follow other great quarterbacks and venture into the broadcasting booth or the weekend pre-game shows.
