The Dallas Cowboys’ Tony Romo Will Step Up in 2009

One of the biggest questions for the Dallas Cowboys in 2009 is whether Tony Romo will be able to be the franchise quarterback everyone thought after the 2006 season.

In 2007 Romo did not disappoint his fans during his first full season as the starting quarterback for the Cowboys.

He led the Cowboys to the top record in the NFC while completing 64.4% of his passes for 4,211 yards with 36 touchdowns and 19 interceptions.

During the three losses, Romo only threw two touchdowns and five interceptions. When it came to their conference games, Romo came away with a 4–2 record.

In those six games, he completed 60.2% of his passes for 1,509 yards with 15 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

During the 2008 season, Romo completed 61.3% of his passes for 3,448 yards with 26 touchdowns and 14 interceptions while helping the Cowboys compile a 8–5 record when he was in the game

Remember those three games Romo missed with the hand injury?

Based on his production rate, if he had played in all 16 games he would have ended up with roughly 4,240 yards, 32 touchdowns and 17 interceptions.

When it came to the conference schedule, Romo led the Cowboys to a 3–2 record in the NFC East while completing 63% of his passes for 1,239 yards, along with nine touchdowns and five interceptions. Though his touchdown passes were down in 2008, overall Romo has improved against conference rivals.

The one area where most Romo detractors focus on involves the playoffs. During his short career, Romo has participated in two playoff games and he owns a 0–2 record. In those games he has completed 55% of his passes for 390 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.

Aside from the lower completion percent, the biggest problem Romo had in the playoffs was the inability of the offense to the passes completed to the wide receivers. In both games, the leading receiver was the tight end, Jason Witten. This is not just the problem of the quarterback but the offensive coordinator as well.

Things will not be easy for Romo in 2009.

For starters, the Cowboys made the decision to allow Terrell Owens to depart, taking with him three consecutive seasons of having at least 10 touchdown receptions.

With Owens in Buffalo, wide receiver Roy Williams will need to improve upon the 19 receptions and one touchdown Williams had in 10 games for the Cowboys. Even though some people have questions Williams ability to be a number one receiver, he will show why owner Jerry Jones brought him back home to Texas.

Opposite Williams will be Patrick Crayton, who production in 2008 dipped from the previous year. Crayton will be able to help Romo’s game if he can haul in 45 receptions for 700 yards and six touchdowns. The thing Romo does have going for him is tight end, Jason Witten, who has had at least 64 receptions for 750 yards every year since 2004.

Then there is the lack of a consistent running game. To help Romo out, the Cowboys coaching staff will need to find a better balance with their running game. With Marion Barber and a healthy Felix Jones, the Cowboys should have a 1-2 punch to keep the defense honest.

Overall, Romo has shown improvement since taking over the starting role and is ready to be the franchise quarterback. To do this, he will need help from the Cowboys coaching staff to help take his game to the next level. If this happens in 2009, NFL fans should expect to see Romo have his best season yet.

    Jim Van Horn ……….

All due respect the Cowboys as a franchise for all sense and purpose are now only relevant when it comes to making money. As to their competitiveness on the field they’re about as noteworthy as seeing Bea Arthur naked. And that’s about all I’ve got to say on the subject ! Bye , bye .
