My Favorite Playboy Playmates: Martha Smith

When you think of the most popular Playboy Playmates of all time, Martha Smith doesn’t immediately come to mind.
But Smith holds the distinction of not only being one of my favorite Playmates, she also starred in one of the greatest movies of all time.
Smith played the part of Barbara Sue “Babs” Jansen in National Lampoon’s Animal House, a Southern belle who spends most of her time in the movie pining for Gregg.
Five years before she landed the role of Babs, Smith was Playboy’s Playmate of the Month for July 1973.
While her co-star in Animal House Mary Louis Weller (Mandy Pepperidge) is the one we see John Belushi’s character starring at through the window as she undresses, Smith had been the one to bare all in the pages of Playboy.
Smith was born on October 16, 1953 in Cleveland, Ohio and went on to star in 12 more films after Animal House. She also had a recurring guest starring role in the TV series Scarecrow and Mrs. King and appeared as a frequent panelist on The $25,000 Pyramid.
Smith may not garner a lot of attention when discussing the most popular Playmates of all time, but none can claim they had a role in an historical movie.
