Grizzlies May Trade No. 2 Pick, Narrow Choices To Four
Published by MoonDog on June 25, 2009
With the NBA Draft upon us, the Memphis Grizzlies are, in effect, the team on the clock, with the Los Angeles Clippers having already announced they will select Oklahoma forward Blake Griffin with the No. 1 pick.
Though they don’t know who they’ll take with the No. 2 overall pick in Thursday’s draft, or even if they’ll keep the pick, Memphis has narrowed their choices to four players.
According to Grizzlies General Manager Chris Wallace, those four players are UConn’s Hasheem Thabeet, Memphis’ Tyreke Evans, Davidson’s Stephen Curry and Spain’s Ricky Rubio.
Memphis has been receiving frequent queries from general managers representing many NBA teams trying to move up in the draft. At this point, the Grizzlies have yet to hear an offer they feel is in their best interest.
While Rubio is among the four players Memphis has on their radar, the Spaniard has made it clear the Grizzlies aren’t one of the teams he’d prefer to play for.
In fact, Rubio refused to workout for Memphis and instead held a private session with the Sacramento Kings. Grizzlies Owner Michael Heisley has no hard feelings for Rubio or members of his camp for not arranging a workout for the Grizzlies.
“I don’t knock him for wanting to go where he wants to go,” said Heisley. He says that he knows that Rubio’s agent, Dan Fegan, is just looking out for him and wants what’s best for his client. “I don’t feel disrespected at all,” said Heisley. “I think he is a good agent.”
Regardless of how Rubio feels about the Grizzlies, Heisley says the team will pick who they feel is best for them. “I am going to keep my cool and we are going to pick who we think is the best for us,” said Heisley. “If that’s Rubio, we are gonna pick Rubio.”
Heisley also says the gamesmanship from team Rubio may lead him to actually draft the point guard.
