Farewell Farrah Fawcett
Published by MoonDog on June 26, 2009
As everyone knows, Farrah Fawcett passed away on Thursday after a long battle with cancer. I had the good fortune to watch Fawcett when she became an instant success on the 1970’s TV series Charlie’s Angels, the show that made her a household name and an icon in American pop culture.
As the years progressed, Fawcett’s popularity continued to grow as more people began to realize she was much more than just a pretty face.
For those of us that grew up in the 70’s, Fawcett was the “it” girl. In 1976, the famous poster of Farrah in a red bathing suit was hanging on every bedroom wall of every teenage guy I knew.
Sales of the poster have been estimated to be between five and 12 million, but it wasn’t just about the blond hair, the bright smile, the blue eyes or even her nipples that most consider the focal point of the poster.
Granted, Fawcett was a sex symbol and idolized by millions of men young and old. But as we discovered, she was a much better actress than many gave her credit for and most importantly, she was a fighter.
Fawcett did everything she could to confront the cancer that ultimately felled her and despite cancer’s victory, she won the battle of spirits.
Many will recall her appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman where a seemingly distracted and rambling Fawcett became the butt of jokes. But no one was laughing when at the age of 50, Fawcett posed nude for Playboy.
It didn’t come as a surprise to see Fawcett attract a new generation of admirers. Just when everyone thought Fawcett was down for the count, she came back fighting. That was the true essence of Farrah Fawcett.
I have nothing but fond memories of Fawcett and admire how strong she was during her battle with cancer. I’m saddened by her death and extend my deepest condolences to her family during this time of bereavement.
Farewell Farrah.
