Does The Piston’s Joe Dumars Have A Master Plan?
Published by JM Van Horn on July 4, 2009
For the past week, the sports talk shows in Detroit have been wondering if Joe Dumars, general manager of the Detroit Pistons, has a master plan after he cut ties with head coach Michael Curry right before the start of the NBA free agent bonanza.
Despite not having a head coach in place, Dumars has been able to sign free agents Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva. Gordon, who averaged 20.7 points per game in 2008-2009, gives the Pistons a scoring threat but he plays little defense.
The concern is that the backcourt is a bit crowded in Detroit with Gordon, Richard Hamilton and Rodney Stuckey.
Villanueva, who averaged 16..2 points and 6.7 rebounds per game in 2008-2009, will be a better shooter and rebounder for the Pistons than Rasheed Wallace.
Villanueva will need to step up his defensive game if the Pistons are going to make any noise in the playoffs next season.
The possible missing ingredient to Dumars’ master plan?
The New Orleans Hornets big man, Tyson Chandler.
During the 2008-09 season with the Hornets, Chandler averaged 8.8 points and 8.7 rebounds per game. Chandler has only been in the league for three years since he was drafted with the second overall pick in 2001 by the Los Angeles Clippers.
If you want to find his best season you only have to go back to the 2007-2008 when he averaged 11.8 points and 11.8 rebounds per game.
What if Dumars is able to complete a trade and bring in Chandler to secure any of the rebounds from missed shots? This could leave them with the following lineup; Chandler, Prince, Villanueva, Stuckey, and Hamilton, while allowing Gordon to come off the bench.
Let’s give credit where it’s due. Mike Valenti, from the Valenti & Foster show on 97.1 The Ticket in Detroit, tossed Chandler’s name out there. And the more I’ve thought about it, the more it makes sense.
Does Joe Dumars have a master plan to build another championship team by sticking with second tier players rather than chasing after a marquee player?
Or is he going to continue to tarnish his reputation and build a less than .500 ball club?
The ball is in your court now Mr. Joe Dumars, show us what you can do.
