Georgetown, Pitt Highlight 2009 Jimmy V Classic
Published by MoonDog on July 15, 2009
Butler will face Georgetown, and Indiana will take on Pittsburgh in the matchups for the 2009 Jimmy V Classic, to be held at Madison Square Garden on December 8.
This will be the debut for Georgetown and Butler in the event, while Indiana and Pittsburgh each won their only other game in the Jimmy V Classic. The Hoosiers topped North Carolina in 1999 and Pittsburgh beat Memphis in 2004.
The V Foundation for Cancer Research was founded in 1993 and honors the late Jim Valvano, who was the legendary North Carolina State basketball coach who led the Wolfpack to the NCAA national championship in 1983.
Since 1993, the Foundation has raised more than $80 million to fund cancer research grants nationwide.
The V Foundation has also received generous support from ESPN basketball analyst Dick Vitale.
His efforts via his personal fund raising effort – the Dick Vitale Gala – raised $1.1 million for cancer research during the 2009 event and has raised a four-year total of $3.7 million.
