Prostitutes working in German brothels are feeling the economic crunch just like the rest of us. Working girls have seen their client numbers plummet since the start of the global economic meltdown.
In an effort to bring in more business, many brothels are offering discounts for their services, with one popular chain in Germany even advertising a flat daily rate.
The Pussy Club chain is offering clients a flat rate of 69 Euros, or $98.00, to spend the day with any of the club’s working girls.
But politicians say the flat-rate sex sessions violate the dignity of working girls. Authorities are trying to shut down the brothels, arguing the new pricing plan “violates the human dignity” of the women.
Ulrich Goll, justice minister for the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg, said, “If you look at the way these brothels advertise, then there’s a violation of the human dignity of the prostitutes who work there.”
He is seeking an outright ban on the bargain-basement sex dens.
The operator of the Pussy Club brothels, Patricia Floreiu, defended the new pricing scheme saying, “It simply brings in more customers.”
She argued that most customers leave after one or two sessions and that none of the women are forced into working under the new terms.
“Hardly anyone can ‘do it’ more than twice. So basically the flat rate is mostly for the free beer,” said Floreiu.
In the end, it appears that no matter what course of action the brothels and politicians take, the prostitutes are the ones literally – and figuratively – getting screwed.
