Carolyn Murphy, one of the most beautiful women to have ever appeared in Sports Illustrated’s Swimsuit Issue, celebrates her 36th birthday today.
Murphy began her career at the age of 16 when her mother enrolled her in a modeling school. Soon, she was modeling locally in Florida, as well as abroad in Japan and Paris.
Murphy enrolled at the University in Virginia, opting to model part time. She appeared in a number of ads and photo layouts in French Vogue, Missoni and Gucci.
In 1994 Murphy was hired to model for Prada and appeared in major magazines like Harpers Bazaar and Vogue.
In 1998, Murphy was named VH1/Vogue’s Model of the Year and in 1999 she was cited by Vogue as the Model of the Millennium.
In 2001 Estee Lauder signed Murphy to an exclusive contract. In 2005 she was featured on the cover of the annual Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue.
Reluctant for a career in acting or in the spotlight, Murphy moved to Costa Rica in 1999 and married surfer Jack Schroeder which ended in divorce in 2001.
In 2006, Schroeder was arrested and charged with extortion for trying to sell a sex tape featuring him and Murphy having sex during their 1999 honeymoon in Barbados. The video was leaked onto the Internet in April 2006.
Murphy was No. 84 on the latest AskMen.com poll of its Top 99 Women and was tied for No. 10 with Miranda Kerr in a recent Forbes magazine poll of the World’s Top Earning Models.
