Robert De Niro Turns 66; 12 Videos Of His Best Scenes
Published by MoonDog on August 17, 2009
Robert De Niro, perhaps the greatest actor of our time, celebrates his 66th birthday today. Born in New York City, De Niro is well known for his method acting and portrayals of larger than life characters.
De Niro gained critical acclaim in the early 1970s, beginning in 1973 with his role as Johnny Boy in Mean Streets. That film marked the first of many collaborations with director Martin Scorsese.
In 1974 he won his first Academy Award as Best Supporting Actor for The Godfather Part II. He became the first actor to win an Academy Award speaking mainly a foreign language.
De Niro and Marlon Brando, who played the older Vito Corleone in the Godfather Part 1, are the only actors to have won leading-role Oscars portraying the same fictional character.
His performance as Travis Bickle in the 1976 film Taxi Driver forever linked De Niro’s name with Bickle’s famous “You talkin’ to me?” monologue, which he improvised.
In 1978, De Niro played alongside Christopher Walken in the acclaimed Vietnam War film The Deer Hunter, for which he was nominated for an Academy Award as Best Actor in a leading role.
After working with Scorsese in Mean Streets and Taxi Driver, the duo teamed up for six more films, including the 1980 film Raging Bull in which De Niro played boxer Jake LaMotta, a role that earned him his second Academy Award.
De Niro and Scorsese worked together in the 1990 film GoodFellas, Cape Fear in 1991 and Casino in 1995.
In 1987 De Niro played famed mobster Al Capone in the film The Untouchables. In the film which earned actor Sean Connery his only Academy Award, De Niro worked alongside director Brian De Palma, who some consider responsible for discovering him.
In easily one of his most memorable roles, De Niro played Jimmy Conway, based on the real life gangster Jimmy Burke, in the 1990 film GoodFellas.
Although his performance in the film was exceptional, Joe Pesci won the only Academy Award for GoodFellas when he took home the Oscar as the Best Supporting Actor for his role as Tommy DeVito.
While De Niro has gotten away from the grittier roles that brought him fame, he’s still one of the most bankable actors working in Hollywood. He’s also worked behind the camera as a director, overseeing the filming of A Bronx Tale and the 2006 film The Good Shepard.
Take a few minutes to watch the clips of my personal favorite scenes starring Robert De Niro and here’s hoping one of America’s greatest actors has a very happy birthday.
